Hi guys... According to the 'new' posts on the forum, I haven't checked in for almost 2 years... I'm so sorry for that... It was the latest landing on Mars that made me come back, the name of the Mars rover (Perseverance) reminded me of the late Rick Jost's signature message: Perseverance furthers. So how are you doing? Got my contract with BMW ended during t

You don't have to keep paying taxes if you just store the car until it gets and oldtimer

Had the chance to visit BMW Classic, the factory and the museum. Classic has some nice rare cars and motorcycle collection at the location where BMW started 100 years ago (they recently re-acquired those buildings). The factory is really amazing to see, especially because they do so much on a relatively small location, some robots really have to squeeze body panels through openings to get them

Check rack, linea, pump, cooler for leakage. Check P/S fluïd level/top up. Steer from lock to lock à couple of time to get the air out. P/S pump belt OK and enough tension? No strange nonsens should be heard, effort should be even along rack travel.

And driver influence... You can make a car look real bad just by driving differently.

If the car is complete and in good condition, try to get a lower price. An engine repair/swap can't be that expensive if you can do some stuff yourself. 2000€ and that car could be running again.

That is sad news. Rick was a member long before I got here. I'll remember him as a gentle man, loving his cars, bikes, boats, wive and daughters. He'll be missed. I wish his friends and family strength in their mourning.

Depends on the gearbox design. Longitudonal positioned transmissions often have a direct gear, transversal ones have to be as short as possible, in recent years a lot of them have become multishaft without a direct gear.

Nicely done! Jealous of the ice tracks you have, I need to work on my driving skills, that kind of track would come in handy...

The problem is that when you stall the engine and then put it to N, you aren't very sure what state the transmission is in: which clutch and what brake is free and/or (partially)engaged, which could cause some extra friction. After a while, pressure could drop in the valves and pistons, freeing up the brakes and clutches, but that might require more time than to overcome 300 m by walking.

During diagnosis, I often ask to check connectors or to use 'flying' leads, unplugging the original ones. More than once mechanics don't believe it at first (it sure isn't a wiring problem), to see the issue is being fixed doing so.

The only time I would mix up pedals is when getting in an auto and trying to hit the clutch to start the car (damn I hate those safety features, why can't we just start with a turn of the key?). I guess two feet driving in an auto would be just as dangerous, as people might press both pedals in an emergency and then back off the brake while still on the throttle.

I strongly recommend to use the hydraulic brakes on an i3 at least once every drive, to keep the discs clean and rust free, else an emergency stop could turn out not to be so efficient.

Have you checked the ground straps for good connection? Take them off, clean the surfaces and reconnect them. Same for the fuse box wiring, any corrosion to spot there? When checking wiring, don't just check for continuity, also check for short circuits to B+ or ground.

They are a result of a failing system, a system that fails to put all of us to work, to have a meaningful life. A system that failed to integrate 'them' into our society and so on and so on. Since we live in a democracy, we are society, we choose the system, we all together have caused this. In a way. We haven't asked for this, we haven't caused it, but we haven't don

A very happy 2015 for everyone, wish you all the best! I hope I won't need a new car in 2015, the last but one day of 2014 brought me a 2007 E61 520d!

The REX version is a bit ridiculous, 9 liters of petrol only brings 100 km extra autonomy. I'm considering leasing one since my daily commute is just 50 km, I could recharge for free at work and the lease cost is low (just €295/month). Main disadvantage would be not having a tow bar so I should get one on the wife's car. Other option would be a 2nd hand touring but I'm a bit sca

Stay away from the Xdrives, the slightest difference in tyre circumference messes up the clutches and you're in for an expensive repair. Since the differentials are open, they're quite useless anyway. They'll never meet the E30's iX system performance.

Good thing. Over here there often rejected at the annual inspection, as their lambda value would be off limits. Sure, they're lean burning engines under certain circumstances...

Every car has its collection of issues, the positive part for older popular models is that they're well known and well documented on the interwebs. The E46 is one of the better modern cars by BMW, with less complicated electronics than more recent models like the E90 (E60's and E65's have really complicated electronics networks, including fibre optics). Ove's suggestion isn&
