I'd forget about that shock and rather pay for a new one. We often bend shocks at work by impacts, need a long straight ruler to check for bending, in the long run you'll end up replacing it again. If you want to re-use parts from a crashed car, go for the parts that were in the non-impact zone.by Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum
QuoteEarendil Most of the bolts I removed were very crisp and new looking, with a slight coating of clear grease. However 3 of the bolts were soaked up to their heads in dark engine oil. Is this cause for concern? If every bolt was equally hard to remove, how did oil get in there? I could only see an inch or so into the bolt holes, and couldn't see anything but air. Don't post stuff like that! Makes me miss my iX! There's a good reason for iX's not being for sale: their owners tend to stick to them! And who could blame them... It's a lot less complicated than modern cars and does the work at least as good. Mechanics, that's all it takes, not electronics. That means buying tyres of which the size doesn't start with 'P'. I used to have a set of Kumho Ecsta's on my iS, was pretty happy with them, they last long with pretty good allround capabilities. I had to change the rear ones, Marangoni don't-know-whats, as I'll be buying another car soon and wear my rear ones on the iS a lot faster. On my iX I used to have Micby Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum
I remember on my 325iX I had no rev-limiter (LPG converted). Being unaware of the rocker issues (and young and stupid), I overrevved (as in 1000 rpm beyond the start of full red on the scale) it often, without ever breaking one. I guess you need some amount of luck at times. I may consider myself to have been lucky as the valves didn't float either.by Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum

Most electronic throttle pedals will cut out when brakes are applied for a while. I was having a US Ford Fusion throttle pedal in my hands today and a mechanic said it was a nice piece of engineering. I said it sucked, true throttle pedals should have a cable or a linkage, not an electronic connector. Heel and toe, double declutching, forget that, soon all cars will have double clutch transmby Michiel 318iS - Community Forum
Thanks for your reply, but I meant magazine articles in which they actually weighed the vehicle.by Michiel 318iS - Community Forum
A colleague of mine is looking for two things: 1. Original articles on E30's (I know there's a site with several articles, but can't remember the URL), especially those in which the vehicles were actually weighed, not the BMW published figures 2. Retrofit LSD components for non LSD cars (especially Z3/Z4) Who can help?by Michiel 318iS - Community Forum
Most importantly: the cabin has to be real clean in order to suck air into the engine without harming it. No candy papers, no junk food containers, no cell phones, no loose CD's or USB sticks and no wearing ties.by Michiel 318iS - Community Forum
Spent most of my evening reading this thread on r3vlimited, worth having a look. It's about an M3 being stripped and rebuilt. Nice write-up. And I got to it looking at an m20 oil sump to see if that guard has accomodation for quick oil changes (see other thread).by Michiel 318iS - Community Forum

Seeing that amount of rust, I'm getting more and more convinced that now is the right time to put my E30 to a retired state. Fix all issues before it gets too bad (some minor spots out of sight here and there). Looks like a fun project, you'll definitely put more money in than you'll ever get out of it. Careful with the fan, you can destroy a CPU within seconds if you don't have the fan running. Could be your motherbord giving up, had it with RAM memory as well. If you feel confident, you can try to open the case and get dust it out. Can make a hell of a difference. Success!by Michiel 318iS - Community Forum
Stiffer mounts will give you just a bit improved engine response and very slightly better handling - you need to be an expert to notice. What you'll notice is more engine sound into the cabin. I thought E30 mounts could be replaced by stiffer E24 mounts, but I'm not sure.by Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum
The M-badge - if original to the car - can be compared to the iS or eS badge in the US, just being a bit sportier than the stock stuff.by Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum
Used to have such a VW (T3 model, 1.6 turbodiesel but I swapped the damaged engine with the intercooled version of a Golf/Rabbit), not the camper but the double cab version. Lovely piece of machinery (real easy mechanics). I'd go for a T4 Westfalia diesel, consumes a lot less and has a good bottom end torque. Stay away from the 2.4's, go for a 2.5. 1.9's need their engine repby Michiel 318iS - Community Forum
Love this topic! I agree with most you say, but I still want to comment on it. ;-) On short trips, water enters the engine through piston blow-by (especially when cold and especially on older engines), just as unburned fuel. On real short trips, even the unburned fuel will stay in the oil system (especially a problem on direct injected engines). My previous 318iS had a pretty worn engineby Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum
Only when all of the oil is at temperature, all of the moisture can evaporate. And if you've driven an M3 (or any vehicle with a oil temp sensor), you'll know how long it can take. Moisture gets in when hotter air (which contains moist in most of the cases) gets into contact with colder parts of the engine.by Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum
Moisture only evaporates when the oil gets at temperature, which can take quite a while. And even then you need a number of miles before most of the moist gets vented out. I agree that oil can last a lot longer when conditions are good (long periods of operation, without overheating). Trucks were getting oil changes every 120.000 km (when I was working at a trucking company) just because theby Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum

It doesn't happen very often that you get a glance of what happens in between the fences of my work location. It's in dutch so you'll probably understand very little of what they say, first some blabla on some drivers they hired temporarily, a very short view on a couple of the tracks and a piece on the new cable guards they've installed. First I read he charged you for 8 hours of work, I thought he was pretty cheap. But even at 0.8 hours, he isn't expensive at all. A BMW dealership doesn't go below three figure bills...
