I had to leave the country for 2 weeks for a funeral, and while I was out, my son called telling me how he had a bad hose and was leaking water. He said he tried to patch it with duct tape to get by. To my horror, he said he was close to home and the car stalled. A police car ended up pushing him home the last 1/4 mile. Next day he took my car so he could buy a hose at the dealers. He replacedby sdp - Technical Forum
I can't remember exactly, but I think I used one of the large bottles.. A Quart???by sdp - Technical Forum
My son and I replaced our master cylinder a couple of years ago after he lost his brakes.. Very spongy and went very far to the floorboard... I thought the replacement was very simple. I spent more time trying to clean the reservoir from the sludge caked in it. You will have to use quite a bit of fluid to flush out the system . Right rear, left rear, right front, left front.. We pumped/flusheby sdp - Technical Forum
Thanks for that link.. Got it bookmarked. Love the illustrations.. Better than RealOEM.by sdp - Technical Forum
I took a look at the pulley and forgot that we didn't put the belts on it (power steering and AC). Since the AC hasn't worked in a long time and since we had to disconnect the AC radiator there was no pint in putting it on. The steering rack leaks like a sieve, so my son wasn't putting oil in it. I don't know if that ruined the pump, but since the power steering wasn't woby sdp - Technical Forum
What kind of driving do you do? That has to factor into the type of tire right? I have a E90 and the Bridgestone runflats were great for handling but I wouldn't get more than 25K miles on them because they are so soft. At about $300 a pop I switched to a harder rubber Bridgestone for longevity but it is non-runflat . The price was almost 1/2 the run-flats. The difference in performance iby sdp - Technical Forum
Nooo...I quickly put away the torque wrench when I snapped the 1st one... I did them by hand. That's what you get when you are in a rush to get the job done. I wasn't reading the reassembly instructions because .. I know where everytyhing goes... But right there in the text it said 17 lbs but I was looking for it in the torque charts... BTW.. The radiator tends to leak on the sby sdp - Technical Forum
Another rookie mistake... It's 17 ponds.. I read the torque specs in the chart for Flywheel bolts.. Stupid me... the flywheel is at the clutch. Mistaken terminology. Live and learn. We'll tap it out some day when/if something goes south again.by sdp - Technical Forum
I couldn't get a compression reading before I put everything back together again so I said forget it.. I don't understand why it wouldn't register. I tried a couple of cylinders. Whatever it is.. so be it.. We put it all back together and turned it over. It fired right up and worked like a charm. Woohoo... I don't know about the compression, but my son said he barely had to giby sdp - Technical Forum
Well sumbeetch... I was off by 1? tooth. When we were lining things up I used the notched(blank) part of the toothed wheel to line it up with the line on the lower cover... Unfortunately, tonight I saw that mark I was looking for.. The line with the OT mark.. It's behind the cogs.... dang.. It was off by 3/8- 1/2 inch.. The marking is not in the blank portion of the teeth... So with the newby sdp - Technical Forum
Ahh yes.. I got the names crossed up. I wish I had the time and space to dig into the car like thatby sdp - Technical Forum
Perhaps.. I was looking at your pictures from the broken spring thread.. I noticed (and remembered) that the pistons were notched to clear the valves... Maybe if I'm off by a tooth, the valves might just be touching and would only be "heard" when the engine was running and not hand turned. I went and bought a new timing belt and compression tester today . We'll start dismaby sdp - Technical Forum
I forgot to ask... I know there is a timing mark on the crankshaft that is visible when the belt pulley is removed. Are there any external markings on the toothed timing flywheel to line with something on the engine body?by sdp - Technical Forum
Yeah, I knew I should have ordered that belt. When you are rushed to get the car going and you take shortcuts.. well.... But what gets me... If we did miss putting the belt back on by a tooth and the valves were indeed touching the pistons.. Wouldn't I feel it when rotating the engine. Wouldn't it jamb? And yes to John.. I meant the pully on the toothed timing flywheel.by sdp - Technical Forum
Hey guys.. how's it going? Here's a question for you experts... My son was complaining about a lack of power in his E30. He went and bought new plugs and replaced then himself. When I looked at the old plugs, I saw that one looked "wet". I asked which one it came from but he didn't bother looking at the plugs as he removed them.. Well the plugs didn't help andby sdp - Technical Forum

LOL.. yeah front/rear is better... Well in that diagram I see it as follows (as is my configuration).. Guibo-drum-driveshaft... you on the other had seem to have Items # 2 & #3 swapped. You have Drum-Guibo-Driveshaft.. In that diagram the guibo is exposed and attached to the front of the drum. The only thing inside the drum is 3 bolts & 3 nuts. The opposite is on the front side of thby sdp - Technical Forum
Well no wait... Yours is in front of the guibo. In the drawing as mine is, the drum is behind the Guibo with the guibo completely exposed with access to all bolts and nuts.by sdp - Technical Forum
My guibo/drum is exactly like in this picture.. Drum behind Guibo Motor Mount... I lost the brand new one I bought. Can you believe that? It's un-F'n believable. I know I got 2 of them. I either put is somewhere and we'll find it after I buy a replacement. Or since we were working till 10PM on Friday (we finished on Sat), we might have set it down and it rolled down the street aby sdp - Technical Forum
Today was our day to replace the water pump... Got that done and got under the car to replace the engine and transmission mounts. I looked at our Guibo and differential. Our E30 had the dampener too but it was on the back side of the guibo not over it like yours. It appears they decided over the guibo way was stupid. I wanted to say check your mounts while you are there. Our engine mounts werby sdp - Technical Forum
The drum is epoxied to the trasmission side? That's bizarre.by sdp - Technical Forum
Good deal!!! Yeah.. breaking the nuts on the Diff was a bear when we did it. We used the 2 wrench box-open combo to get enough torque. Someone on the previous forum posted a pic for me and it worked great. I was lucky to not have that "balancer" on mine. Well at least you are on your way. I'm not looking forward to replacing the blown water pump on our E30 this weekend. Wifby sdp - Technical Forum
Didn't I mention center bearing being shot causing the vibration???? LOL Either way though, with your U-joint shot.. you need to replace it all.by sdp - Technical Forum
Read this tread.. maybe it will help...by sdp - Technical Forum
Is there any chance that only your center bearing is shot?by sdp - Technical Forum
The Guibo on ours blew out completely a few years ago. It was a mess, but I was able to drive it home slowly about 13 miles from my sons school. Inside that rubber is a whole lot of string holding it together. Mine, however, did not have the protective flange. It did have 3 bolts in one direction and 3 in the other. I'm going to guess that the 3 bolts (trans side) are part of the protectiby sdp - Technical Forum
The steering rack on our 1990 is leaking pretty badly. I've looked around and prices are way up there for remanufactured units. Didn't see much online as far as replacing seals yourself (didn't look hard). I have a source locally for BMW salvaged parts. What are peoples opinions on this subject. Replace it, remove it and have a shop repair it, DIY? How hard it is to removeby sdp - Technical Forum
QuoteEarendil Another question, when pulling the drive shaft from the tranny, does the tranny oil spill out? I need to know whether I need to be draining it and buying more to replace it. The driveshaft and transmission ares separated at the Guibo bushing and you will not be removing anything from the transmission, so don't worry about that.by sdp - Technical Forum
It's a 1990 325is... I checked this weekend and there is no danger of the alternator cutting any hoses. There's nothing there and there is a metal bypass pipe that routes the water from the right to left side. However, given the 2+ inches the engine is shifted (to the left), the right side of the fan is about 1/4 inch from the radiator. Too close for comfort.by sdp - Technical Forum
Hello all, Is it a simple task to replace the Engine Mounts? I just ordered almost $300 in parts (Distributor, Rotor, Cables, Plugs, Air Intake and a few other things) and as we started working on the car, I was inspecting the engine and I noticed that the engine mount rubber was torn/sheared. I confirmed that the other side had sheared also and the entire engine had shifted over 2 inches.by sdp - Technical Forum
