2012 Black Bear Rally - A3 Egan South 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U3VNnuqPRgo Finally, I replaced the GoPro battery with a fresh one and it worked fine from here on. The HD image quality of the GoPro, mounted on the roof, gives a much better impression of the speed we're carrying. We start with a short sprint on the fast road, before turning left at 0:50 onto the narrow twisty

2012 Black Bear Rally - A2 Peanut 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ulF1xBsGelc At the start of The Peanut stage I noticed the GoPro camera wasn't running. It's reporting that the battery is dead. Damn. Too late to swap in a fresh battery. So again no GoPro for this stage. I did fix it for the 3rd stage though. Someone with the YouTube name of "KIL390" posted a vid

2012 Black Bear Rally - A1 Egan North 1: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sNwzEq71aJU With the radiator fan wiring corrected, the engine temp gauge was sitting rock solid at its usual mid-scale position. Phew. Big relief. That means we don't need to pump heat into the cabin anymore. However, it was still deadly hot anyway inside and outside of the car. The first casualty of this ext

2012 Black Bear Rally - Registration and Recce: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8s1syTT2g10 We had plenty of adventures at the 2012 Black Bear Rally. This first video starts off in Martin's shop as we're loading the mighty Nissan 240SX into the trailer. Very unusual for us, we were packed up and ready to go several hours ahead of our typical last second departure time. Since we

The shoe is drying out, but still has a funny looking stain on it. I'm thinking of soaking the other one to match. Meanwhile it makes a good story. The fix went well. It really is MUCH easier to replace the heater core on A/C equipped cars. It's all buttoned up again, no leaks.

Driving home from work a couple of days ago I stopped off at the gas station to fill up the tank, cleaned the windshield, and then continued home. At home I carried the empty garbage cans from the end of the driveway back into the garage. Go in the house and bend down to untie my shoes, when I see, huh? , one of my nice brown leather shoes, half of the right foot, is all stained and wet throug

I'm glad you're okay, Peter. The car too. Nothing mechanically damaged. That's just a beauty mark to give it some character. A little bit of primer to keep it from rusting is all it needs. Makes a good story. You, on the other hand, could have been killed. Yikes!

QuotecarrapezaMy fuses used to blow intially, now they just melt... Kindly advise what the cure was for your number 10 fuse blowing. Is it only Fuse-10 that's blowing? Fuses should not be melting! Fuse-10 should be just 7.5 amp. The whole point of having a fuse is that it's the weakest link in the circuit. Any short downstream in the circuit should blow only the inexpensive and e

QuoterkjI took the 48 Plymouth's carb apart the other day and it was gummy black around the jets.... On the bikes I have installed shut-off valves and run them dry if they're going to have to sit... I think you're on the right track with the shut-off valves. The float bowl in a carburettor is vented to atmosphere. When left to sit, the gasoline will evaporate from the float bo

Take the cluster apart again and check for cracked solder joints on the pins for the large 26-pin connectors, especially the end pins. I used a soldering iron to re-flow the solder connections to cure my cluster issues. See these two articles for examples. http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showpost.php?p=2417825&postcount=26 http://www.r3vlimited.com/board/showthread.php?t=219465

QuoteJose Pinto Someone had fun going sideways... Can't you lower the Nissan headlights for sligthly better aerodynamics? Meh. We don't need no aerodynamics. That's what horsepower is for! Martin removed the motors which raise and lower those headlamps. They were broken anyway and just extra weight to carry around. The lamps are fixed permanently in the upright posi

A5 - Northbound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TzvQsRknrJw We experienced our only moment of "drama" just before starting this 5th stage. Normally, with no remote-control for the GoPro camera mounted outside the car, one of us needs to wait until the last moment to start the camera before scrambling back into the car to hurriedly get belted up. For these next runs though, I move

QuoteJose PintoIs there any event you want to write about? Everything ran smoothly for us. We had a uneventful rally, no problems, no moments, no flats, no crashes, and hardly any stories. Results for each stage are posted here: http://kwrc.on.ca/2012/Results/Lanark/ Everyone survived the first northbound stage. We could probably have been quicker. But then again, we might have cra

A week ago (May 5th), Martin and I competed in the Lanark Highlands Forest Rally, finishing 8th overall and 1st of the 2wd teams. This is an Ontario Regional event, hosted by our own Motorsport Club of Ottawa. It's run on an absolutely amazing rally road which was used back in the 1974 Rideau Lakes Rally when that was a World Rally Championship event won by Sandro Munari in a Lancia Stra

Bad cat? I have a bad cat. Every night he jumps on my car with muddy or sandy paws. I'm hoping to get the car painted this summer, but I'm going to have to do something about that #@$% cat first.

Ron Howard has been posting daily photos on his Twitter account (https://twitter.com/#!/realronhoward) during the filming of his movie "Rush". It's about the battle between James Hunt and Nicki Lauda during the 1976 F1 season. This looks like it will be good. SS16 - Lapointe - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=olkGgKF1oLg It's late. The rally started at 9am and it's now already past 11pm. It's a long tough event. We're fried and just want to get home in one piece. This last stage is intimidating. Most of the opening section of this road is ridiculously fast, where we're well up into 4th gear. It's scary. The road

SS15 - Tortue Nord 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEpOJHfhfU4 Because we were delayed so long on previous stages, there's now a big gap ahead of us in the running order. To close up that gap as much as possible, rather than make us sit and wait for our scheduled check-in times, the marshals at the arrival controls of the previous stages have all been waving us in early. We then ask

SS14 - ForĂȘt de l'Aigle 2 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBTVUpdF7es There's not much to say about this stage, other than it was yet another disaster for us. The first ten minutes are boring, but then we begin to see more and more snow hanging in the air which means we must be catching up to another car. Martin is backing way off the throttle over every blind crest, worried abo

SS13 - Kitigan Zibi 3 - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtK-2gbc6po Encouraged by our performance on the long forest stages during which we moved up ten places from 28th to 18th overall, and refreshed by a service stop during which nothing needed to be repaired, we're looking forward to doing this same long loop again now. Except, almost right away we get stuck again... At 3:20 we se

QuoteJose PintoIs it normal to run so close together or it was due to being a long stage? Cars are started into the stage at one-minute intervals with the fastest cars at the front of the pack and slowest at the back. In theory, if the cars are all seeded in the correct order according to their expected performance levels, the gap between cars should gradually expand on long stages as the faster
