Most of my hand tools are Craftsman, including my torque wrenches. While most Craftsman tools are very well made, I'm afraid I must agree that their torque wrenches are a disappointment. When mine breaks, which it inevitably will, I will be replacing it with something else. You are correct that the Craftsman lifetime replacement service does not apply to torque wrenches. I'll second

Quotewodcutr I have a high compression snowmobile motor that I just burned up because I was stupid and did not add high octane race fuel The key is "high compression". I have friends with race cars that only use leaded 110 octane race fuel for the same reason. That has little to do with our E30s, though. QuoteI am also willing to bet that if you conducted an experiment on your own car

Quotewodcutr As far as paying for premium fuel I believe you should be putting that in anyway, especially in the summer and on a higher mileage engine. I think that for three extra dollars per fill up it is worth it...skip the coffee for a day and invest in something good for your car. There is nothing inherently "good" about higher octane fuel. Higher octane fuel is needed to prevent

QuoteMichiel 318iS Guess what... The UFO lovin' comrades are back... Yeah, they have been for two days. In one of the earlier posts in this thread I pointed out that Gus has renewed the bmwe30.net domain name, which brought the UFO site back from the dead.

Quoterkj Just give him/her a call and see what happens. Way back when I was a kid, I was riding my bicycle along a road (legally, and on the right side of the road) when a car came out of a driveway, clipped the rear wheel of my bicycle, sent me sprawling, and bent my wheel. The car didn't stop, but I got the plate number. My mom was able to get the guy's name and address, and I wrote h

QuoteArcheo-peteriX Get rid of the flat view...it's confusing if the poster doesn't 'quote' what/who he/she is replying to. Actually, Peter, I think you will remain in a small minority on this issue. Most forum software these days doesn't even offer threaded view. I chose Phorum largely for that feature, just for you. I agree that quoting is just good etiquette, but

QuoteArcheo-peteriX It's already there in the black bar at the top...Subject Author Views Posted B) That's only the case if you're using the threaded view. The flat view doesn't show that, and my guess is that most people are using the flat view. I'll try to see of there's an easy way to show those numbers in the flat view.

QuoteArcheo-peteriXThe good news is that out Russian ufo friend has also lost his free host Not so fast. According to a whois search, it looks like Gustavo has re-registered the bmwe30.net domain name this morning, and the Russian cybersquatters are now back in business.

QuoteArcheo-peteriX Daniel, where did our link to igor's site go??? I'm not Daniel, bit I'll answer anyway. The link is on the "main" page: http://www.bmwe30network.net/ -- which is not reall "main" at all, but could be. I would like to have something reminiscent of the old BEN there, but sadly doing so will take more time and work than it took setting up this f

QuoteCab Treadway When you're going forward, the shape of the contact patch is less important Your explanation makes perfect sense from a physics theory perspective. However, does this imply that a monstrously powerful car like a 500-HP Corvette Z06 should accelerate in a straight line just as quickly with skinny 185s as it does with the 325s that it comes with? Experience would suggest othe

QuoteArcheo-peteriX I think some of the misconception about wide tires and grip comes from seeing those huge tires on dragsters. Maybe, but huge tires win the trophies in autocross, too. My track/autocross car is a Mazda Miata. Until a few years ago, the hot tire to have in CSP was either a 225 Hoosier or 215 Kumho V710. Both of those are really fat on a Miata. Then, a couple years ago, Hoosier c

QuoteArcheo-peteriX I've never understood the contrary logic used to justify bigger brakes on a car just because it has more hp. If the weight of the care is basically unchanged, then the amount of braking power needed to stop the car from any speed will be the same irrespective of what the power is. Yes, but presumably with more power the speeds attained will be higher. QuoteThe only tim

QuoteMichiel 318iS What is a "huge puddle" in the driveway? Any pictures? Small amounts of fluids can cause large puddles, it's hard to relate the size of a puddle to an amount of fluid. Sorry, no pictures. It was probably about 1/2 quart (liter) Friday, another 1/2 quart in the driveway yesterday, another 1/2 quart in the garage after I moved the car in there, and probably abou

Quoterkj Its important to check and make sure the old gasket comes off the old filter when you're changing out the filter, and ofcourse tighten it with a good grip by hand. I always put a very light film of oil on the gasket and then wipe it gently before it goes in place. Yes, I always do that. I once saw a friend of mine dump buckets of oil on a track once when his oil filter let go. It tu

I live in one of the warm spots in Vermont, so our temperature this morning was only -15F, instead of the -20F to -30F of nearby places (that's about -29C to -34C in the rest of the world). By the time I got out to my car to drive to work it was a relatively balmy -7F. I don't usually let my car warm up, but when it's this cold I do let it idle for a couple minutes before driving,

QuoteCab TreadwayI've so far only tried one brew from Otter Creek, the Raspberry Brown Ale (their Winter brew). I can barely taste the raspberry, so it's not too fruity, and overall it was a very nice brown ale. Yum. It was enough to make me want to try some of their other beers. Hmm. I haven't had that one, but I'll have to give it a try. I'm not a fan of berries in m

QuoteCab TreadwayI was trying to keep it local and get some Wachusett and/or Otter Creek (Dave should recognize that name, I hope!), but they were sadly out of stock of my favorites. Ah yes, good 'ol Otter Creek, brewed 4 miles from my house. As much as I like to buy local, I'm not a fan. Every restaurant in town serves Otter Creek, and on tap it's OK, but I've never been able

I assume you mean Nov. 25 rather than Nov. 5. Either way, whatever video I select, an attractive female voice tells me "this content is currently unavailable." I guess the CBC is scared of Rick Mercer being seen outside of Canada. A lot of his rants are available on YouTube, but alas not the tire one.

QuoteFerdinand Primarily the LSD gives you a traction advantage if you have one rear wheel on ice and the other on dry pavement, where an open diff will just spin the wheel on the ice with no useful torque going to the wheel with grip on the pavement. But the secondary benefit of an LSD is the confidence of knowing it will consistently handle the same way every time, spinning both wheels on dema
