Quotedaniel the only part i wasnt too sure about was the "viewing options" part, where it gave the option of flat, threaded, or hybrid. i figured hybrid was the correct option so that people could choose their preference, yes? Actually, most people will probably use the flat view, but it doesn't matter, because it seems that each user's personal preferences override whatever t

Quotedaniel will you temporarily adopt me so I can participate in some of these darn things? Nonsense, get out there and do it yourself! No need for any adoptions! First thing, go here: Oregon Rally Group. Find a friend and go participate in some TSD rallies, which are relatively tame, low-speed, low-cost events, but provide a good introduction to rallying. I've never done a true stage rally

QuoteBostonRob Yes I have pics and I'll try to post them here I guess. did that work? Yup! Here's a tip: after you attach a picture file, if you click the button that says "Create link in message", a thumbnail will show up in your message, instead of just a text link. That's a gorgeous E30! Who do you run with? I do a lot of track days/time trials with COM, who are al

Sounds like great times! One of these days I'd like to make it up your way for one of your rallies. It'd be about a 6 or 7 hour drive, but I think it would be worth it. And then there's that one(s?) in Quebec that would be even closer. Recently, in the afterglow of this year's Vermont Winter Challenge Rally, a few people have begun discussing the possibility of holding a se

QuoteAndy 90 325i The problem with your fix is that the SRS system is no longer active. If there is a fault it will not operate in an accident. Hmm, are you positive about that? I thought I checked into that at the time, and determined that it was just a bulb that was turned on, while the air bag system was still operable. I can't remember for certain, so I'll need to go back and doubl

QuoteBob P 325is 88 And paying 250$ for the capacity to store the equivalent of 20 CDs in a lossless format seems ridiculous to me, even if it saves bulk and weight. Actually, $250 would get you a 120GB iPod, which would store roughly 6000-7000 lossless tracks, or about 500-600 CDs worth.

Quoterkjitunes is evil?, Whys that Dave? Until very recently, the music that you download from iTunes was "protected" with Digital Rights Management (DRM) that restricts playing it to the computer that you downloaded it onto, or an iPod. You could not play iTunes on, for example, a Sansa, or any other MP3 player -- just an iPod. Furthermore, iTunes was simply an interusive piece of soft

Quoterkj So I guess itunes is that same crappy cramped mp3 format then, that's too bad, its so handy. Oh, BTW, for anyone interested in music downloads that offer higher quality than you get with MP3, check out http://www.hdtracks.com/. They offer downloads of CD-quality, AIFF or FLAC lossless formats, or 320 kbps MP3 (which is close to CD quality). iTunes is evil. There are better audio

Quoterkj I get some CDs from the library and then burn them here through itunes; so the cd is in mp3 format, yes? No. The CD is uncompressed digital audio, in a format known as PCM that AFAIK does not really have an analogous computer file format. It is much higher quality audio than MP3. iTunes, or any CD-ripping program, converts the CD's digital audio into something that your computer

QuoteAndy 90 325i I don't think you have an airbag, but if you do, you may set a fault by pulling the wheel. I don't know why but it set a fault in mine and it was difficult to find someone who knew how to clear it for me at the time. I have an airbag, and I have pulled the airbag without setting a fault. It's a pretty easy process: disconnect the battery (wait 15 minutes), pull t

QuoteEarendil Of Note, I did NOT need to remove my steering wheel to get the Instrument cluster out of my '89 325i Really? Wow, when I pulled the instrument cluster out of mine I first tried doing it that way and it appeared nearly impossible. When I finally decided to pull the steering wheel, I had so much more room to work with it made the job more pleasant. I'd like to see how you di

Yup. Of course the most famous of the MP3 players is the iPod. However, I would recommend against any of the MP3 players that use a spinning hard disk, such as the "regular" iPod. They work great for a while, but they inevitably crash after a few years. The rougher you are with them, the shorter their life span. (My own iPod is about 5 years old and on its last legs.) IMHO the flash-bas

Where I live, we have 6 traffic lights, and I've never seen anyone run one of them when it's red. For years the biggest problem was that at one of the lights where it's legal to make a LEFT turn on a red (from a one-way onto a one-way, at a quirky roundabout sort of thing), half the people never did, so sometimes you'd have to sit there behind someone for an extra minute. Where I live is mostly just a blurry greenish smudge, with a kind of blurry white blobby thing where my house is. If you try to zoom in for a closer look, it says "We are sorry, but we don't have imagery at this zoom level for this region." So, no, I haven't noticed any changes.

Quoterkj How are snow tires any good on ice?, are they a softer compound? Yes. The rubber compound makes a big difference on ice, and indeed on any surface in cold temperatures. Snow tires also frequently have lots of sipes, i.e. thin slits cut into the rubber, that help a lot on ice, snow, and mud. Between the compound and the siping, even non-studded snow tires can be quite good on ice. Ther

Quoterkj The only thing for me is tires; these suemetomos are not that great on ice what are you guys running on the ice, studs? Some people (including me) run street studs, many run unstudded, and a few run specialized super studs, i.e. bolts or screw studs that offer huge amounts of grip on the ice. In ice racing, tires are almost everything. Tires matter much, much more than he car, and most

Quoterkj When the next race, and are you saying race my car? I could do that if it doesn't cost too much Absolutely! Most of the cars there are daily drivers. The date of the next event depends entirely on the condition of the ice. We try to have them every weekend, conditions permitting, but this latest big thaw really set us back. It's cold again, but it will take time for the ic

QuoteFerdinandHow do get your GPS coordinates to map onto Google-Maps like that? That's cool! It is pretty cool, isn't it? My datalogger exports the data to a GPX file, which I can then read into this extremely useful web-based utility: GPS Visualizer. That site converts the data into a .kmz file that can be read by Google Earth. I can import the .kmz file into Google Maps so all m

Well, Ove isn't here any more, so I guess it falls to me to write about sliding my E30 around on the ice. Last weekend, just before the big thaw, our local sports car club had a great time driving our cars around on a course plowed on a nearby lake. It was the first time I had managed to get the iX out on the ice (the last few winters have been pretty dismal for good ice), and I must say I w

Actually, the cat is the one piece that's still good. The Y pipe just downstream of the cat has rotted out, and both pipes upstream of the cat have holes too, and have been welded previously. It just looks bad enough that I think replacement is a better long term solution than more patching. I have a lead on a used one that I'm following up on. I'm a little leery of used exhaust

I've just discovered that an exhaust leak that has recently gotten very loud is coming from the front pipe before the catalytic converter. It was patched by previous owners, and is now to the point that it needs replacement. As anyone who has shopped for an E30 catalytic converter knows, these things are really pricey. Most of the usual online sources either don't carry them or are o
