I have one and I'm quite happy about it. 270.000 km on it now, 150.000 by myself in the last three years. Most of the issues I know about are engine specific and won't help you (mine is a diesel). My CD player has died on me when I bought the car, that's about it.
My sister had one 320d, from almost new until 3 years ago.
It was starting to give some troubl

More like the first 18 years?

It depends...At first you must adjust your life, like major adjustments, then things start to follow new routines...
Cars are so easy, when compared!

One way or another, have your projects ready by the time the baby comes, it will be quite intense at the first months. The first 36 months, or so...

That's somewhat more difficult, as with any car make that's gone dead. VW/Audi (NSU was part of Auto Union) no longer supplies new parts. So the only way getting parts is through clubs, mostly salvaged parts from cars that are beyond a state that can be repaired.
Don't know how is VW/Audi support for older cars, BMW and Mercedes are very good at that. OTOH, VW/

Several major projects at once: The e30, the starter motor and the baby.
RESPECT!
Next time you leave a car parked for a long time, (assuming your garage is leveled) don't pull the handbrake, just leave it in gear and chock two wheels.
All the plastic hoses will give you trouble, once you start to use the car. You may want to replace the coolant and fuel hoses at once, while at it..

Quality management procedures don't mean the products are inherently "good", only that the quality is monitored and measures are taken to avoid recurrent problems or improve the product or the process.
I had the engine mount of the mercedes w124 fail after only 3000km, not fun. Had my money back, but still tehy didn't pay the hassle to have it back in shop.

Michiel,
I'm sorry if I have somehow offended you
Come on, you two!
Everyone knows cute girls don't have bodyhair.
And when some lonely hair starts to appear, they use lasers, or wax, or lotions or other fancy things. Blades are for dudes.

My favourite part is the 60's models, paving the way for the modern day BMW.

Nice going Kelly, the only thing that made me cringe was the screw driver part. I think a good razor blade with a proper holder/handle might be a better idea, windshields like to crack easier than you think!, but all and all a very helpful post to a very tricky problem. Again, well done
Cheers, Rick
ps, lunch is on me next time
Rick, why would Kelly have a razor blade?!

I am one of the few people that don't have a facebook account
I will use my g/f's account to look for him
Thanks
If you can do without your own account that is best. Facebook is one of the most privacy invasive sites on the whole Internet
Indeed, but is only as "privacy invasive" as people allow it to be. One shouldn't disclose e

Once I had to glue the RVM on a car of mine, I had it done at a car glass shop, they did it in a minute or so...
But next time I may want to do it myself, and is good to know there is a "plan B" if the result is not satisfactory...

Intermittent problems often come from bad wiring, poor contacts, corroded connectors ant all that...
Those are the most annoying to diagnose.
Try to test both your ECU on another known good car, if you can get your hands on one...Better than replace The ECU without being sure it is not working.
Get the electric wiring schematics of your car, and follow the circuits and check all connectors y

Now you made me feel less stupid about my MB ex-taxi with 665000km and counting... Most things were tested and replaced several times, and something is always about to give, but still they don't break all at once, so it is the ultimate ongoing project.
On the upside, the car depreciation is completely off the equation.
Some cars, like any good e30, even increase price with age.

OTOH, I seldom refuel before the "low fuel" light is on, thats the way I use to keep track of mileage.

I think it may be the answer to the competition, unfolding the range expecting to reach every customer...
Look at Mercedes Benz, and Audi, and the others...
As for the BMW 1 series, is much better than a MB A series...
It's not meant to be successfull at the US (there's something about hathcbacks) , but is doing fine in Europe!

Aha, the ideal donor car to restore my 318iS. What a shame to have had this car standing for almost 30 years.
I guess this car would make you forget all about the 318is in minutes...
What kind of person has a car like this and leaves it standing for a lifetime?!

Is it really the muffler that did this, didn't you change anything else before noticing the mileage going bad? If it should be the muffler, do you have the right type?
I had the oposite idea, bad exhaust or mufler causes worse mileage, but never had that explained "as if I was very dumb"....

The water level seems to be holding. I plan to take it for a little shake down cruise on Saturday just to make sure before I head for Montana on the Independence day weekend. No evidence of water getting into the oil.
Good plan, most probably everything is fine now.

One of the neighbor's, a 19 year old came over and asked me about the car as he is considering buying a 1988 E-30 coupe. Even in my distress of having a garage full of parts instead of a car, I offered him encouragement that it was a good idea.
Priceless!
My old Citroen shows all those symptoms at a mere 200000km, plus horrid oil consumption... So you know how dur
