As I was taking the belts off I noticed that water pump appeared to be leaking slightly so changed it and the idler for the new belt. Good advice all around.by Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
Thanks for the encoragement Peter. I have heard that the ethylene glycol is damaging too. There is a few tablespoons full of "mayonaise" in the baffle in the valve cover but the oil never did get the milky look. I would not be surprised to see some water come out when I drain the oil though. The filter will be changed too. The cylinder walls still have some hone marks showingby Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
I had a few minutes of doubt but then took the 710 cap off and glared inside the valve cover for a little while. It appeared to look wierd in there so I pressed on. After I got the valve cover off it was obvious as there is water in the low spots under the rocker arms. I now hope I have not done damage to the crank bearings. Almost afraid to pull the drain plug to see how much water there isby Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
After my trip Memorial week end trip, I decided it has to be the leakage is going into the crankcase somehow. Took the plunge and ordered up the gasket kit and several other parts to change the head gasket. There sure are a lot of parts that have to come off. I have worked on it for about 4 hours already and have just about got the timing belt off. Discovered I probably should change the wateby Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
If you loosen the ground connections, might want to clean the contact area and coat them with a dielectric grease to keep corrosion out. Corrosion is the enemy.by Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
Intermittent electrical problems are really difficult to find. Could be some ground issues that cause some sensor to be acting failed for a while. Warming it up and drying it out seems to be the answer. Otherwise, water ingress into someplace like a connector that dries and then allows normal operation. Check for corrosion in all connectors where water or condensation could form.by Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
Cleaning with SeaFoam or some similar chemistry may do some good and even water may help but I am thinking the problem is more to do with the ignition timing. It is computer controlled but for some reason is advancing too much. Perhaps a sensor has failed and prevents correct control . There may be a code in the ECU that would give a clue.by Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
To get to the heater fan motor and resistor block one must remove the cover on the firewall above and at the rear of the engine. it has four plastic nuts along the top edge and it tilts forward.by Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
If you are a bit careful not to move the crank or cam the marks should stay where they belong. Line them up first and take a picture of them before taking the belt off. Then when you put the new belt put the tension on it and check again. This is one thing you do not want to miss.by Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
I thought they were better corrosion protected than that. My E-30 gets driven all winter and has not rusted yet.by Bob in Lake Havasu - Community Forum
That is one thing I have not tried yet. I was trying to think of a way to put some compressed air into the system and replace the bad cap with one at the correct pressure relief setting. I have a 1200 mile round trip coming up at the end of the month and need to decide which car to take.by Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
I checked the plugs a couple weeks ago and they all looked normal and not steam cleaned. I expected to see one or two that looked different from the rest but they all looked the same to me. It could be the heater but have not noticed the telltale smell of coolant or fog on the window.by Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
Thanks guys for all the commentary. It gives me more ideas of places to look for the lost fluid. I had not thought about the bottle its self. The main reason I have not replaced the cap is that several hoses on the cooing system are verrrryyy old. Especially the expensive one under the intake manifold that is molded into a four branch cross of some kind. I have perused each with a clean papeby Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
I agree with you but I have driven it to California via San Jaquine valley at 108 ambient with aC runnning and did not lose that much coolant. I was watching it very carefully and checking it at every stop along the way. My thermostat is only a 180 deg. so it does not press far into the boiling range. Since I watch this kind of thing carefully and do all my own maintenance, I am not worried aby Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
The cap has not held pressure for the eight years I have owned the car. The rate of fluid loss has been very slow. Mostly when the heater core was leaking. The situation most recent is a much higher loss rate. It could be the heater again but I do not notice any smell from it like it has in the past when it was leaking. Also does not fog the window on the defrost setting. That reminds meby Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
Might try a bit of dielectric grease from the auto parts store on the connector pins. There is some possibility that if the pins were deformed just a little (perhaps flattened slightly) the contact would be more firm and would be maintained.by Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
Thanks for the good suggestions. I have been under the hood this afternoon looking in just those areas but was not able to find any evidence. Making this more perplexing is that my coolant filler cap does not hold pressure so the coolant reservoir and radiator do not have any pressure to force a leak. The water pump will create some with its flow. The water pump was leaking a little for severby Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
This problem has started in the past month. the coolant was a little low so I added to the full mark. About a week later, low again. This is unusual for my car to be doing this as in the past I have not had to add coolant more than about once a month or less. Now, it is every couple hundred miles I have to add about a pint. The usual suspects such as water pump, no puddles on the ground orby Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
My guess would be the resistor block has one leg that is broken. The wiring diag. shows resistor #1 at 1.6 ohms is probably the culprit. Maybe the connector to the resistor block just needs to be cleaned.by Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
Well, one of those inputs must be giving some wrong info. If it is all the way left it thinks there is no fuel being commanded to the injectors. All the way to the right, it thinks there is a lot of fuel being commanded or some really low speed reading. My guess is it could be either the OBC or the ECU.by Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum

I still have one of those tape cleaning kits. Mine came with a 6 disk cd changer in the trunk too but the moisture condensation inside it finally took its toll and the mechanism no longer works correctly. Wish I could find a replacement that just plugs in directly. I like the simplicity of the stock radio.by Bob in Lake Havasu - Community Forum

I must be buying the wire harness in the wrong place. Mine cost a lot more. Next year I will wait till the first of April to take my snow tires off. Last night it snowed about 6 inches with only half of it meting by the morning commute time.by Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
Your success with the wire harness is interesting. I have a new set of ignition wires I could try. I bought them a few years ago and put them on the car and it made no difference so I put them away for a rainy day. I had put new plugs in a few months ago and it made no difference. If the weather ever quits dumping on us here I would be able to spend more time with the car. I took the sby Bob in Lake Havasu - Technical Forum
