Well... It is true then, everything comes to an end. Even when it's a bitter end. Still, you're welcome here and not just because you know a bit about E30's, but because you're quite bearable. It's not because you haven't got an E30 anymore that you can't be an E30 enthusiast.by Michiel 318iS - Community Forum
Oh no, it isn't a collectors car, like an M3, it's a workhorse!by Michiel 318iS - Community Forum
My car isn't young, it's even older than Cab's, but I haven't had it as long as he has his. Bought it at 120.000 km, now has 140.000. Have done oil change on it and got to have a closer look to the metal bits. Expect a lot more covers! At least on my diesel engine, there's a large cover, hiding all you would like to see when you open up the hood. The air filter is haby Michiel 318iS - Community Forum

Have had my E46 320d for 4 months / 20.000 km now and I'm pretty happy with it. Drives well, silent, good seats, good comfort - even with the M pack (seats, suspension, 18" wheels). Cheap to run, long maintenance intervals, good mileage (diesel). Common failure (diesel again) is the 2nd catalyst, had to replace it already. It feels as a good replacement for the E30, bit more comfortby Michiel 318iS - Community Forum
I'd recommend doing the transmission removal on a hoist, that way it is really easy when there's another pair of hands to help. That is how I did a clutch replacement on my iS, took 4 hours to do (the other guy had done it before, for me it was my first time). For the clutch alignment, you can make your own tool, with a broomstick or something similar. If it doesn't fit the clby Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum
The oil down there prevents the water from getting to the metal, and thus from rusting. Just don't let get tons of dust settle on there!by Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum
I am not surprised. 250.000 miles is quite a lot and if at least one of the previous owners wasn't to good with manual transmissions, or had to make a lot of uphill starts, or has towed a lot of stuff, the clutch would have been replaced at least once. And at that mileage, just the style of driving can wear a clutch as well (quick launches, a lot of shifts under load, up and down,...).by Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum
A tout le monde, à tout mes amis. Would be a good idea to quote a song in every message. Mine came from a Megadeth song. I wouldn't be surprised some cracked spark leads would cause the sparking everywhere, except at the plugs, and an older distributor won't help then getting the plugs to spark. Just think of this: it isn't a money pit, a newer car is more expensive and aby Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum
It doesn't break on purpose. Maybe your cold winters have sped up the process. Why plastic? For sound reasons (metal on metal or spring sounds)? For not having water freeze to it as quickly as with metal? Maybe the plastic is more wear resistant than metal? Could be anything. One thing I'm sure of: it's not been engineered to intentionally break after x times being appliby Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum
If I'm right, the master cylinder leaks into the vehicle interior, hope for you this is not the case. If the slave cylinder leaks, it leaks into the bell housing, which over time will become clear where the bell housing meets the engine. Whether it is one of the cylinders or the pressure line, you should find a leak somewhere. It doesn't get caught at the other side of the piston aby Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum
Or learn to shift without using the clutch. Driving off will happen when starting in 1st gear then, after having stopped the engine from neutral. Check for signs of an oil leak. If a cylinder is bad and the clutch pedal stays down while the clutch is still fully engaged, you must have leaked some oil. Or just the pressure line is bad. Doesn't look like it is a bearing or clutch spby Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum
I found your post very amusing to read. Your frustration is just the same as the mechanics at my employer. The thing is, it is not only engineering. It is marketing and finance. Things have to be cost effective and easy to mount on the assembly line (eg the clips instead of screws you're talking about). To keep costs within limits, at the assembly line, the guys get just a short amounby Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum
Welcome back! I remember your nick, but I've forgotten about the details. Saw your post on the work you did on the iS, great job. Would like you to redo my steering wheels as well! Your car seems to have an electric fan, did you do that to improve A/C performance? Greets from another M42 driver.by Michiel 318iS - Community Forum
The exhaust is in (or is it 'under')! After a bit of shopping around, I found one in the UK, € 177 (154 GBP), VAT and shipping included. Around here, I could only find one for € 256 without VAT and shipping and I didn't even ask for the BMW price... By next time I have to this job, I'd like to have a hoist in the garage, instead of laying on my back in the dirt of the garby Michiel 318iS - Community Forum

We don't use speedo figures as a measurement, they're way to much off for that, we've got GPS equipment for that (not the stuff being used for navigation, it's way more sophisticated). Sometimes we need to accomplish a certain acceleration figure, which can be reached by playing a bit with the tyre sizes. I have lists for that, but not in such a nice way as the site you mentby Michiel 318iS - Technical Forum

and will prove to be more costly than the good old E30. In fact, both BMW's are letting me down at the moment. Last Saturday I wanted to start up the iS to charge the battery and keep things from getting old just by sitting there. Turned out the battery was already dead (had been sitting for 5-6 weeks). So I jump started it with the E46 and drove it out of the garage. Walking back inby Michiel 318iS - Community Forum

At the moment, we've got the luxury of having a minivan (VW Touran), fun daily driver (E46 320d 4dr) and (momentary stationary) very fun weekend driver (E30 318iS). Now I need to find a way to haul trailers to move the dirty stuff (garden waste etc).by Michiel 318iS - Community Forum
