QuoteAndy 90 325i Supposedly the new BMW Diesel's exhaust is cleaner than the air going into the intake in LA. :embarrassed: That is only true if CO2 is not considered 'dirty'. The exhaust of the diesel will contain more CO2 than the combustion air. The exhaust will, however, contain less NOx than the injested air because of the urea injected into the exhaust. Diesel re

I remember all of those years also. I was driving a 1984 318i through 84 to 88 and then acquired my present '88 325is in 1988. it has always run fine with 87 octane, but in the summer i would use the 89 octane because of the higher temperatures. I believe that the Australians use the research octane numbers which are higher than the North Americian R+M octane numbers, so I would use the

I think that your fuel pump is going or the intake filter on the pump is partially clogged. Pull the pump and look. Bob P.

What dave g writes is quite correct. That being said, I run the lowest pressure that gives me max grip without 'rolling' over in tight corners at speed. That has given me 34 lbs on the front and 32 on the rears on Goodrich Traction T/As. generally, with the different tires that I have run on my E30, the pressures have run between 32-36 in front and 30-34 in the rear. QuoteDave_G QuoteBob P 325is 88 And paying 250$ for the capacity to store the equivalent of 20 CDs in a lossless format seems ridiculous to me, even if it saves bulk and weight. Actually, $250 would get you a 120GB iPod, which would store roughly 6000-7000 lossless tracks, or about 500-600 CDs worth. Ah,memory capacity just keeps getting better, but then i would still have to load all those CD

QuoteCab Treadway QuoteBob P 325is 88 I guess that I a one of those wackos who is just nuts or can distinguish proper reproduction of full symphony orchestra from the distorted sounds given by poor recording techniques and lousy MP3 playback. Salut, Bob P. As I'm learning in my Coding & Information Theory course I'm taking right now, any lossy compression technique (of which MP

Not all vinyl goes Snap Crackle Pop. Probably only 20% of my 500 or so vinyls sound that way. That being said, the sound on the recorded medium is more a function of the recording technique than the playback method, especially classical and jazz. I have vinyl that sounds better than its digital counterpart (yes, we audiophools get the same recording in different playback modes) and some CD

Quotewodcutr I was also told that outside temperatures and elevation contributed to this meltdown. What say you? Sorry, I missed this in my previous answer. Higher elevations will enrih the mixture IF there is no computer to calculate the actual mass of air, since its density is lower at elevations. Higher temperatures (of the air) will increase the propensity of detonation due to the high

Let's clear up one thing immediately. Higher octane fuel DOES NOT burn cooler. I don't know how your mechanic came up with the diagnosis that your piston melted due to a lean mixture, since the symptoms of detonation damage to pistons and lean fuel damage to pistons are very similar. For racing, using a richer mixture is the way to go, unless mileage is important, since there is les

Huh?? As long as you are ready to discuss things, in a civil way, of course, then I have no problem. Hell, you can argue, if you wish, but keep it civil and you won't have any problems, at least not from me! Salut, Bob P.

Quotewodcutr QuoteAndy 90 325i Quotewodcutr So what you are saying is that because there are no knock sensors in our motors the ECU does not adjust the fuel mixture or retard the timing. I believe it does, just not to the extent that a more modern engine would. What I am getting at is that our computers certainly do have the capability of adjusting fuel consumption for better or worse economy b

peter, and others, I find that it helps to distinguish between an argument and a discussion. What is the difference between an arguement and a discussion? Peter, you know that I use the Socratic method for teaching, therefore I shan't give what my definitions are for discussion and arguement, until we have had some discussion on the subject, except to say that in my 38 +years of mariage

I think some time ago I had expressed, specifically to Cab, that there are three subjects that are not discussed in polite society - religion, politics and women. I stand by that. The arguments are always emotional and usually sterile and lead nowhere, except, perhaps, to hurt feelings. Now, let's get back to the discussion of the 'mythical' turbo lag in diesels being due to t

Excellent information, but sometimes difficult to follow. My take on that info for our engines (pre-vanos etc"), is that Mobil 1 0W40 does very well and so would a 15W50. I don't see any information on the 5W50, but I suspect that it is a group IV and would suit me fine, as I have been recommending. The oil recommendations and standards have really changed with the arrival of the hyd

You are probably correct for the s52 engine, unless it is showing signs of burning or passing oil. A 5W30 synthetic should still be alright, but if using/losing oil, a switch to 5W40-50 should do the trick. Salut, Bob p.

Danial, If the lowest temperature that you are going to see is only 20F, then i would suggest that the present 10W40 synthetic is fine. Personnally, for those conditions I would go for a 15W50 synthetic. Presently, I run 5W50 year round in my M20 of 666,666 kms(love that number) and I have experienced temperatures as low as -35C, with no starting problems. I haven't seen a 0W50 synthet

Switching to a 15W40 oil from a 5W40 because 'the engine is older and needs thicker oil' is nonsense. Both oils, especially if they are synthetic, act as a 40 oil when at normal engine temperatures. The 15W oil is thicker at cold start temperatures and actually offers less engine protection due to its lower flowing capabilities at those temperatures. Stick with the 5W40 synthetic o

Well yes, thanks to Cab, I have found the new forum. Nothing real special since 'losing' the forum in December, except that I have had much more experience on my Impreza with its Bridgestone Blizzack W60s. I chose them because of their superior dry running properties, compared to other winter tires, since that is mostly what we encounter here in Quebec. Quebec has passed a law mand
