QuotefritzThe 318i pulley extends further than the old pulley, and as a result the belt cannot be fitted. Where would I be able to obtain the correct pulley. I would guess that any of the usual online vendors (Pelican Parts, Elephant Motorsports, Bavauto, etc.) would have this. That's where I'd look first, anyway. Or you could look used at e30parts.com, Euro Depot, etc. All these are l

Quotenomis3613Without ABS, the passenger side should lockup miliseconds later so you shouldn't notice just one wheel locking on its own. That may be the theory, and while in theory there should be no difference between theory and practice, in practice there is. As I mentioned, over the years I've locked my brakes many times, and in every instance only one (front) wheel locked. In my M

QuoteFerdinand My wife's 2002 Subaru Outback has ABS and I detest it with a passion. It is waaaay too sensitive and kicks in way too early, and then it feels like it's not braking at all. I hate it so much that I always pull the ABS fuse on the Subaru before the first snow flies. It's not just you. It seems like everyone hates Subaru's ABS. For the record, I've had ABS

I (unfortunately) have a lot of experience locking up the brakes in my track car (a 1990 Miata). It does not have ABS, and because I'm threshold braking most of the time, there have been moments when I get carried away and lock them up going into a turn. As you discovered, it is always the front right that locks up first. Why? There are a couple things going on here. 1. Street cars are a

QuoteCab Treadway [Me, too. So far so good. Warranty is gone, it was 3/36, and I'm at a little over 3 yrs, and 53k or so. Just need another 7 years or so of trouble-free driving. Our Mazda6 is now approaching 5 years old w/ 89K miles, and we have had almost no problems with it, so overpaying for a wonky sensor doesn't sting as bad as it otherwise might. The only warranty work we ev

I've asked around and nobody knows of anyone around here who repairs these. I'll probably just replace it. Now the question is, when? Since we're pretty much out of A/C season now, I'm thinking of waiting until spring. Bit if I do that will I destroy the new drier that I just put in since the system is open to the air?

I had to replace the MAP sensor on the Mazda this week. It's about a 1-inch cube of plastic with a vacuum hose on one side and a wire on the other. The price? $120! And that was the cheapest place I found on the Internet. The dealer price is around $200. Holy smokes, what's in those things? Platinum?

Quotedaniel Quotesdp Perhaps you have the option to turn off that reply box at the bottom. good idea. Yes, it is. Indeed there is a module to do just that. I've installed it and turned it on, but it doesn't seem to be doing anything. I've contacted the author to see if there's something that I need to tweak.

Quotedaniel Quoteducatipasocan we get a mod to split this thread? i tried to split it and it only put one of the posts into its own thread, not that post plus the following posts. i guess just make a new thread. Yes, if you look at this thread using threaded view, you see that most of the posts are replying to the original post, not to the previous post. That makes it impossible to split. Spli

The A/C in my E30 hasn't worked since I got the car several years ago, and this weekend I finally got fed up and decided to troubleshoot it. After hooking up a vacuum I determined that the leak in the system, which I had hoped was caused by a bad O-ring, was in fact caused by a hole in one of the condenser coils. I can replace the condenser for about $150, but I'm wondering if there are

QuoteEarendil The Sports seats confuse me... there are 2 levers and a knob on the side. The knob I figured out, and one lever adjusts the angle of the backrest. I can't figure out what the 3rd one does? The rear lever adjusts the angle of the backrest if you pull it up, but it also adjust the height of the seat bottom if you push it down. The forward lever adjusts the angle of the entire

Quotedaniel yes, the oil filter. eventually it involved me hammering a screwdriver through the middle of the filter, then using my body weight to try to get it to unscrew. a simple oil filter wrench wouldn't cut it. Oh, yeah, I remember you talking about that. That could happen with any engine, not just an M20. It has little to do with the car, and more to do with how the filter was put on

Quotedaniel i don't blame you for having your oil changed by someone else. changing the oil on my M20 was such a pain. the one time i did it, it took me about an hour. ?? I'm unclear why this should be. Difficulty removing the oil filter, maybe? I change my own oil all the time, in all of my cars, and the E30 is no more difficult or easy than any of the others. Quotedanielhaha those tests look... safe. It's not without risks, but if you're careful and slow, the chances of the car falling off the jack are small. It's the only way I know of to accurately assess the state of the VC.

QuoterkjHow does one check the center VC thingy, and what exactly does it do and what are the ramifications of it being hurt?? There's a lot of confusion about how the center diff in an iX works. The torque split is controlled by a chain mechanism that always delivers 63% of the torque to the rear and 37% to the front, regardless of the state of the viscous coupling. The VC is the locking me

QuoteCab TreadwayIf they made a coupe version, I'd say the Miata/MX-5 would be a nice current E30-like car, but then you lose the practicality of having a rear seat. It's funny. Recently over on the Miata forum someone asked the same thing in reverse: what would be a good replacement for a Miata? And among all the responses, the most frequently offered was... you guessed it: an E30! The

Shoot, I go away on vacation for a week and miss a big discussion of one of my favorite cars, the 325iX. Most of what I would add to this discussion has already been said by others, but I'll just add a few observations of my own. I live in ski country, I love to ski, and I can frequently be found in the winter months driving through snowstorms to get to the mountains, often before the plo

Yup, like Daniel said, this is a brand-new made-from-scratch site that we created after the old BEN died. Sadly, because no one had any contact with Gus, every single thing from the old site was lost. Don't worry, your "Newbie" tag will disappear after 10 posts.

QuoteCab Treadwayon the D90 at least, unless you specifically set it, the AF will refocus when you recompose, even with the shutter release half-pressed. I would guess that Nikon has different AF modes similar to what Canon has, which would solve that problem. The AI Servo mode is for tracking moving subjects (I use it for sports all the time), and it will behave as you describe if you try to ref

Quotedanielif i use multi-point focus, it is simply leaving it up to the camera what to focus on, NOT focusing on various depths, right? i shoot on aperture priority but i suppose if i switched to P or auto it would change the aperture to allow for a couple faces rather than just one brim of a hat. i like the idea of controlling my DoF, though. Yeah, the only way to control depth of field is wi

QuoteCab TreadwayI know good lenses aren't cheap Very true, and in most cases you get what you pay for. However, don't forget to shop used. Most of my lenses were purchased used, and I got some decent deals on them. Of course eBay is one place (you just need to wade through all the crappy online stores first), and then there are vendors that sell used equipment, like www.keh.com or www.
