The final chapter in the story...after taking the paltry amount of insurance settlement money. I followed the advice above and bought the car back for $400, took it to a good shop with the salvage parts I found to keep the cost down. Still was out about $1800 more out of pocket to get the repair. It looks beautiful now. Cannot even tell where the damage was by looking inside or under. The o

Having the same part number is a pretty clear indication they will fit. Might check on the actual parts for their part numbers but seems pretty clear to me. Bob in Everett

Might want to check for loose bolts on all the suspension that you have worked on. Sounds like the suspension moves to one position under acceleration and then the opposite torque applied by the brakes moves it the opposite position. Just put a wrench on all the bolts and check the torque. Bob in Everett

Wishing I had an ix myself. Had to put the studded snow tires on the suburban so we could get around in Everett. Drove it to work yesterday. Positraction is nice to have too. Almost like having a Caterpillar. Since I had my E-30 cabrio repaired and looking nice again, I am reluctant to put it in harms way even though I have some really nice snow tires on it and it gets around pretty well.

I do get some pushback from the spousal unit about a couple of the cars that she does not like. Those she likes are OK. It is sort of a hobby to keep this fleet running. I do spend almost as much on insurance as I would on car payments. Three cars do get antique car insurance and that helps keep cost down. Bob in Everett

I think you guys are on to something about the effect of the so called terrorists. All terrorism has the appearance of being sponsored by some government or another. The benefit of it would never accrue to the suicide bomber. Bob in Everett

Well, that cold weather got here and did just the most effective thing. Froze the pavement and then snowed about an inch. Took me 45 minutes to go home from work which normally takes 12 minutes. And I was one of the lucky ones that did not have to get on the freeway. That is a big cold parking lot tonight. Bob in Everett

Had beautiful big snowflakes for a couple of hours this morning here in Everett but did not stick to the ground. If we had a couple of days of below freezing weather to freeze the ground it would make driving here a mess. Bob in Everett

Since they will be same sex gropers and most of the TSA employees give the appearance of having nothing better going on in their lives, I am not looking forward to it myself. Video on Utube of the attack on a 4 year old by TSA was bizarre. Bob in Everett

When one drives old cars, one needs a fleet of them. I have 6 just so that something will run at least to the parts store. When I only had 3, I once had to ride my bicycle to the parts store. I have experienced a couple of engine failures. One was partly my fault, I let the spousal unit drive, fell asleep and she lugged an air cooled engine down while climbing a pass and towing a boat. QuoteArcheo-peteriX Rick, I wonder if it's because our E30s(well, yours now) are getting fewer and far between? In my scouring the classifieds, I find that there are few if any E30s being advertised and when they are they are late model cabrios from 92 and 93. I haven't found a single 318i with any motor; M10, M40, M42, M44, etc. This is truly sad...but it also means the the E30 is

Peter, I can certainly sympathize with you in giving up your E-30. I have been fighting with my insurance company over them totaling mine over a fender bender. I was amazed how depressed I was all Summer as it waited the verdict on repairs. I finally had to just spend the extra to get it repaired. It came out very well and I am sorry I waited so long to make the decision. There is a projec

The slow oil pressure was there before I changed the gasket on the pan. I began noticing it after I changed the filter last time I guess. Part of the problem is that my car was out of commission most of the summer with a dented rear corner and it took until end of August to have it fixed. My memory of what it was doing back in May is really foggy. When I got it out of the shop it was very low

Rick, Thanks for the comment but I only removed the pump, did not disassemble it. Is there supposed to be a gasket where the pump bolts to the engine? Realoem does not show a gasket there. I was concerned about this myself and did put some sealant on the engine surface before I bolted the pump in place. Since the pump is submerged, not sure how the pickup tube would be leaking? If I resta

Drove south almost to Olympia and return to Everett by 3:00pm. Spent the rest of the afternoon washing two cars and cleaning wheels. Speedometer turned over 200,400 miles and the trip odometer read 600.0 at the same time. No puddles under my car overnight either. Yes, it is a difficult job and that is why I put it off way too long. Gratifying to have accomplished it though. Oil pressure s

After two days under my beloved cabrio, I have declared victory on the oil puddles. My oil pan gasket was leaking massive quantities of oil everywhere I parked. The old gasket was damaged when I put it on a couple years ago and it got worse lately so had to do something. Went for a drive today and took advantage of the sunny weather with a top down trip of almost 200 miles. Ear plugs help wi

I have had an occasional problem like that with water in the fuel I get. Have complained to the station but they blamed it on the ethanol in the gas but ethanol is what is used in fuel antifreeze because water will dissolve in it. A clean ignition system is important to limit a errant conductor path to ground. The inside of the distributor cap will get dirty due to ionizing of the metal from t

I agree that there is another break you have not found yet. Do not know of an easy way to find the breaks inside the fabric covering. Hope you have not introduced a potential for fire. I have a bad element in my driver seat and am tempted to have it replaced. Bob in everett

Surprised you are having clutch wear that severe to change the clutch more than once in the life of the car. If the clutch slips in fifth gear when accelerating, it is worn out. Otherwise probably not worn out. Bob in Everett

I agree about the injector cleaner. My mileage and performance were gradually getting to the intolerable point and I finally landed on the fix by having the injectors cleaned. That solved the problems. Now, I do occasionally put techtron injector cleaner in (because that is what Costco sells). It seems to be keeping the gremlins at bay. Now, if I could just get that darn oil leak fixed.

I did read it somewhere and it seems like it works for mine when it floods. Can't remember where it came up. Began to think I was going to damage the starter before I learned about it. Bob in Everett

If you suspect flooding on the start, which one would if it did not start in about 4 seconds. Stop and press the gas pedal all the way to the floor and hold it there. Then try the starter with the pedal floored. Be ready though, when it does start, the engine will accelerate very quickly and you want to get off the pedal as soon as the tach hits about 2000 rpm. it will still accelerate past

Might be a leaky injector or some dirty ignition parts. Might try cleaning the plugs and wires and look into the distributor cap. Cleaning injectors or just putting some injector cleaner in the fuel. Bob in Everett

At some point the oil might get too hot for the "quick steel" and melt it out. might want to do a test on some to see at what temperature it gives up. Bob in Everett

The new title came back without any noticeable defect regarding being a salvaged repaired car. There may be a carfax record however. The insurance company to thank for that. Bob in Everett
