Hey can anybody here tell me how to get the ignition key cylinder out of its housing. I have stripped this car down and removed all the lock cylinders and wanted the ignition one as well. I have the thing completely down to the metal housing that is attached to the column, but cannot figure out how to remove that with the cylinder still inside or just remove the darn thing from the housing. I liked Ferd's explanation including the pictures. It would seem that once again I do not totally know what I am talking about and my assumptions could be misleading. I do find it interesting that Peter seems to know something blatantly obvious to him, and unknowingly obvious to me, yet I am now just as confused as Daniel. I guess we will all look forward to the final outcome of this discby wodcutr - Technical Forum
The speedometer has its own coding plug which figures everything out for the gauge in the cluster and it has to be the right one for each specific diff too. Not all cars came with an OBC so the cluster has to function all on its own. The OBC has its own coding plug that allows it to work as well. Lets conduct an experiment. Go and drive your car and see if the cluster mpg meter is the same asby wodcutr - Technical Forum
I could be wrong but I believe that the OBC has its own coding plug. I think it uses the coding plug in the dash as well and that calculates speed and economy depending on inputs from the other sensors. The sensor in the diff can only sense each revolution, just like the crank sensor, thus with different gearing such as a 3.73 or a 4.10 the revolutions would be different so the computer needs tby wodcutr - Technical Forum
Lawyers get paid whether they win or loose. Doctors get paid even if they can't fix the problem or have a bad result. CEO's get bonuses for running a company into the ground. If you are only getting 10 mpg then something is definitely wrong. My truck averages 18 and it has a V8. I think you should compute your mileage the old fashioned way by filling your tank and seeing how far you go and fill up again and divide the mileage by how many gallons you put in. My OBC tells me that I only average 22.8 mpg but when I do the real calculation it is more like 27.5! I thinby wodcutr - Technical Forum
I read a post on the old BEN that measured the amount of air the stock filter allowed through and also a K&N. I can't remember the why or how but he concluded that the stock filter was the best one to do the job. It does not starve the motor for air (unless it hasn't been changed in 40,000 miles) and the K&N actually does not filter as well so you are allowing more dirt into tby wodcutr - Technical Forum
I was building a log house in Alaska once and experienced a 7.2 quake. I thought one of the guys had hit the house with the forklift as I was on 12 ft of scaffolding at the time and really felt it. The epicenter was only 30 miles away out in the bay and all the neighbors ran over and told us to head for higher ground as they expected a tsunami to hit and we were right on the beach. Where would you get the spacers and bolts from and do I need to do all four wheels or just the front?by wodcutr - Technical Forum
Hey everyone, I just acquired a new addition to my family a silver 91 318i. It came with some after market rims on it and when you turn the steering wheel all the way you can hear the tires rub somewhere. They are American Racing Estrella rims that are 14x6 with an offset of 35mm and the backside has a 4 7/8 measurement (what ever that means). Right now they have 195/65/14 on them. Maybe we should get a dash out of a wrecked car for the VIN plate and buy a touring from up north, take the badges off the car, do the VIN swap and register it here! The DMV would never know and neither would the mechanic doing the inspection. Maybe a little deceitful, but when there is a will there is a way!by wodcutr - Community Forum
I did not know they sold tourings in the US...also thought it was very difficult to import one too! B)by wodcutr - Community Forum
I have not done this myself, but I have read that you can check for air intake leaks by spraying starting fluid around all the usual suspected sources with the car running and if the idle surges then you have found your leak. If all your rubber hoses are good then you might want to check the valve cover for leaks and even the oil dipstick o-rings and filler cap too!by wodcutr - Technical Forum
For a guy that can't afford new shocks it seems a bit of a stretch to now want new springs too! I guess we all dream about what to do next. B)-by wodcutr - Technical Forum
Quotedaniel Quotewodcutr As far as the M bushings I would pass on those as they will increase your camber and wear your tires faster. The only advantage is if you are running on a track and consistently turning at high speeds. For everyday driving they are not worth getting half the life of your tires just to do an occasional drift! they increase caster, not camber. big difference. Pardonby wodcutr - Technical Forum
If you are going to lower the car you need different springs and sport shocks...they are shorter. If you still have the stock springs then you do not have sport shocks. You can not tell what brand of shock you have up front because the main part of the shock is in the strut. The only way to tell what springs you have is to disassemble the strut and look at the numbers stamped on the top. Theby wodcutr - Technical Forum
Quotealanrw Cripes!!! Has the car always run hot? I would think the worse you could do is just button everything back up and see how it runs. Sure looks like someone did something silly!! alan I purchased the car knowing there was a problem that two previous owners could not resolve. I figured that they just did not know how to bleed the system properly or had a bad sensor or gauge. I figuby wodcutr - Technical Forum

I am in the middle of doing a full coolant flush and water pump / thermostat change on an M42. I pulled the radiator so I could run some water from the hose through it and as I was finishing I was shaking the radiator around to get all the excess water out from the fins and I heard a rattling coming from inside. I found a shop that pressed the CAB in the lollipops for $20, but I had to go there twice and wait 4 hrs while they got around to it. The other problem is getting the lollipops off the CA. That took a couple of hours as I ended up just cutting the rubber out from around the CA and had a hell of a time doing that. Believe me it is worth the extra money to not have to mess with anything. I would think you could probably just replace the tie rod ends, unless your rack boots are cracked as well, then you might just as well do the whole tie rod with boots. The reason I suggested doing the shocks as well is because this is a pretty labor intensive job and you have to do it all again to install the Bilsteins so you are really money and labor ahead if you do it now, not to mention anoby wodcutr - Technical Forum
This job can be done if you are willing to purchase a couple of tools that are critical to make the job easier. zdmac.com sells some specialty tools for a decent price. I would definitely recommend a ball joint tool as the ball joints can be quite difficult to separate using the fork method and they destroy the rubber boot if you are trying to reuse them. Programa makes a battery less version of our SI boards. Apparently they update the old boards with new circuitry to eliminate the Ni Cads. You have to send in your old board for a core charge refund when you purchase these. I have not used one personally, but I would think that it probably works better than the old version.
