Awesome video, thanks! QuoteArcheo-peteriX Akadeka is how the Aussies refer to AC/DC Actually, the official slang is "Akka Dakka" (and a street in Melbourne has been named after them!). QuoteEarendil So I'm in Safeway (a grocery store) today when I hear the intercom come on and announce: "could come to the phone for a code 1221". My immediate thought was that somebody had an exhaust problem... Should I seek help? LOL! Hi, I need to remove the sunroof so that it stops in the closed position (at the moment it randomly stops 1/3 open!). Can anyone please give me some tips to getting it out? I tried following the Bentley instructions, but was prying harder and harder and thought something would break, still it wouldn't budge.by nomis3613 - Technical Forum
Hi, Should the power windows work when the key is in the "accessory" position? Mine only work when the ignition is actually on, just wondering if this is another example of butchered electronics by some previous owner... Thanksby nomis3613 - Technical Forum
Hi Bushog, Hopefully you can get your ABS working again. I've never had problems with my ABS (touch wood), but the Bentley suggests checking the pulse wheel for 1 no missing teeth or cracks 2 it is not loose or out-of-round 3 faulty wheel bearing causing the clearance to be out (but surely you'd notice other symptoms of a shot wheel bearing too??) 4 dust, including brake dust Hby nomis3613 - Technical Forum
Quotedaniel no no, you break the cd into pieces so they fit into the spaces on the sides of the vents. when i did it i broke it into 4 pieces (with scissors) and then had to cut them down a bit, but once i did you couldn't tell i had jammed them into the vents. Cheapest mod ever! Thanks heaps, not my vents stay put.by nomis3613 - Technical Forum
Quotealanrw Thin plastic shims cut to fit. Just shove em in. The top clear spacer of a new stack of cd's comes to mind. alan I have also heard of the CD spacer technique being used. My vents are floppy, too, I've been meaning to try this myself for a while...by nomis3613 - Technical Forum

It's true that a cat on 22 year old engine isn't gonna do as much as on a brand new within spec engine. But still it'll do less damage to the air we breathe. Your call... Anyway, nice looking car. Basketweave rims, niiiiiice, I'm very jealous!by nomis3613 - Technical Forum
QuoteEarendil I suspect at this point that there is a much higher chance that the breaking difference has something more to do with imperfection between all the tires/rotors/pads/pavement than it does with the engineering specifications of the braking system its self. I totally agree! QuoteEarendil Can we conclude that, outside of normal ware-and-tear items, there is probably no significant prby nomis3613 - Technical Forum
Hi Rick, (apologies to Earendil for hijacking this into an engineering geek-off!) In theory, yes, the pressure wave will reach the closest wheel first. But the speed of sound in water is 1 484 m/s so a 1m difference in brake lines will cause the far wheel to lock 0.000 674 seconds later!by nomis3613 - Technical Forum
Dave, Great video! If only the Singapore Grand Prix last night was as interesting as that, I might have stayed awake for more than 1/2 of it... It's strange that Villeneuve's outside wheel locked each time. Normally it's the (unloaded) inside. Perhaps the outside tire was worn far more than the inside, so it had less braking grip?? If there is a reason that causes one side tby nomis3613 - Technical Forum
QuoteEarendil Not to shoot a hole in your theory.... But when I said front left brake, what I really meant was front RIGHT brake. I like your thinking though I have noticed no unusual smell, noise, or performance change of any kind... accept for the braking of course :undecided: Hi, A friend of mine is an ABS calibration engineer, so I asked him about the whole driver weight = later lockuby nomis3613 - Technical Forum
thanks guys! @ land_sea_air: the fluid is a disgusting colour! We flushed it like 4 times a month ago and it got better, but still not great. The mechanic then gave it another couple of flushes and it's still not right. But he says that E30s are often like that, they be working fine even if you never get the fluid clean. @earendil: rubbing happens mostly for low-speed lots of lock turnby nomis3613 - Technical Forum
Hi, Check when the cambelt was last done. The 6 cylinders use a belt, and it's an interference engine so you wanna avoid pistons bashing valves! BMW spec is 60k miles or 4 years. If you do replace it, some people like to do the water pump at the same time just as a precaution. Apparently our M20 6 cyl engines have delicate cooling systems (but I've never had any problems myself, tby nomis3613 - Technical Forum
Hi guys, Can someone please give me a rundown on how the steering system works, and what to check out to fix a rubbing noise? For a while now, my car has had a groaning when I turn the wheel occasionally. I just got a M-Tech II wheel (yay!!) and now the noise is more frequent. It seems to happen when I am not on flat ground, which makes me think something in the system is moving out of place,by nomis3613 - Technical Forum
Hi, afm: this is a controversial part! It either bolts straight in, or you need to adjust it depending on which mechanic you speak to (also with the same mechanic, depends which day you speak to them!) icv: they changed from a straight through to a 90 degree bend design at some point. it'll be really obvious fuel pump: design got changed from 2 pumps to 1 at some stage. Hi, When my gearbox was replaced, the new one was put in without a "torsional vibration damper" (part #3 here) and they used washers as a spacer instead. I'm looking into getting it fixed the proper way. Can I get a used one from a wrecker or is it something that should be replaced with a new one? Just out of curiosity, what is it made of? Metal? Rubber? How does it work? Thby nomis3613 - Technical Forum
Hi guys, Thanks for the tips. Yeah, I'll be sending them to the Bilstein distributor for rebuilding, not gonna try it myself! Due to stuff being more expensive here in general, it'll still be like 40% cheaper to get them rebuilt if possible rather than buy new ones.by nomis3613 - Technical Forum
Hi suspension gurus, If the spring rate did not change, would the dampers still be suitable if the ride height was lowered (say 30mm)? (I guess I am asking if the operating range affects damper performance) If so, can old dampers (in particular, the Bilstein option that BMW offered) be rebuilt for a different ride height? Also, could the dampers be rebuilt to match a different spring ratby nomis3613 - Technical Forum
Quotewodcutr I thought all E36s had airbags so that wheel may very well fit the E30 or have been modified to fit the 36. Thanks wodcutr. Does anyone know if BMW changed splines for wheels with an airbag? Or was it just a change to the E36 model, regardless of airbag or not? Basically this will tell me if I can buy an E36 non-airbag wheel for my E30. (what I've discovered so farby nomis3613 - Technical Forum
Hi, Will a non-airbag E36 M-tech 2 wheel fit an E30? It looks the same as an E30 M-tech 2, just wondering if they're on different splines though. Hope it is the same, I've found one for much cheaper than the E30 ones usually cost, and I'm keen to get rid of the old "bus wheel"! Thanks, Simonby nomis3613 - Technical Forum
QuoteWithout actual measured energy consumption of both systems, we can only make educated guesses. C'mon, it's not that hard! All we need is - a rolling road dyno - in a temperature controlled room - a load cell to measure the mass of fuel used - a white E30. White is more scientific. Then you just run it with the fan clutch, swap to an electic fan, repeat and hey presto!by nomis3613 - Technical Forum
Hi Jef, I think some models have 2 level senders (each side of the tank). If so, did you check both? Also, it seems like the fuel gauge is damped, unlike the other gauges which drop instantly once you kill the ignition. Does anyone know if it is electrically (capacitor etc) or mechanically (spring etc)? If yours isn't damped, Jef, then knowing how it should be damped might give clues tby nomis3613 - Technical Forum

Hi, Thanks everyone for all the helpful info, it's taken me a while to get around to it, but finally I pulled the dash. I was thinking it would be a scary job but thanks to you guys it was fairly easy! The SI batteries looked less than 20 years old, with no signs of leakage and they had "92 - 02" stamped on them. They each measured 3.3v, which is ok, right? What is normal beby nomis3613 - Technical Forum
What a great discussion! If I may wade in... I had always thought that unless you were on a maniacal horsepower chase, there is no benefit in swapping to an electric fan. Basically because of what Ferd has pointed out: every time you add another component which converts energy, you get losses. So going mechanical (engine rotation) > belt > fan is always going to be more efficient than adby nomis3613 - Technical Forum
