As long as there's greasy stuff in the engine and you do not over stress it, you won't get much damage. Of course, the cleaner the oil, the longer the engine should last but you better drive with bad oil than no oil.

The E46 320d with 212.000 km on the clock is greased with BMW approved LongLife oil, 30.000 km intervals, hardly any oil consumption. 0W30 runs like water but doesn't seem to get into the cylinders or to get passed the turbo bearing. Here's a similar procedure, your DVM needs to be high impedance.

It should be switching from low level (+/- 0.2 V) to high level (+/- 0.8 V) about once a second. On a slow meter you would see a reading of about 0.45 V. If low level isn't low enough, or if high level not high enough or if the switching takes longer, the sensor's on its way out. If the level remains either high or low (no switching), the engine is running lean or rich.

That's what I wanted to suggest, check with a Volt meter, it should switch output level around lambda 1 (so if your car is running correctly, it should be switching constantly). If it is not switching, either the car is off or the sensor is shot.

Check for the usual areas, wheel arches, jack positioning point, license plate area, moon roof, battery tray, trunk side pockets. Others might give some more hints.

You'd need to make sure it is just surface rust, and not rot. You'll need to have a pretty close look at the car at all the known spots. Depends on what you want, a show car or a hobby car, if $3000 makes the difference between a rust free car and a rusty car, you either need to bargain on the rusty one or go for the rust free one.

They're there as they enlarge your field of view, but they distort your ability to judge distances. My E46 has flat inner parts (4/5th) and the outer part is convex. I doubt mirrors will be replaced by camera's soon on lower end vehicles, as is represents a considerable on-cost compared with regular mirrors. Every place in the world has its own specialties and charm but somehow the grass always looks greener elsewhere. There's millions of places in the world I'd like to live. That's a bit of a problem for me when travelling, I'd like to have seen it all, every little corner, curious of what could be hidden there.

There's no differential, that makes them easier to slide. Last year I took part in a cart race on slicks, in the rain. Very hard to keep the cart on the track but oh so much fun, even though the setting sun was obstructing sight.

That's cheap! When mine was my daily driver (no classic car insurance), I paid about € 500 yearly. My E46 is at € 550 if I'm not mistaking.

He's got an eta, with i in injectors in there. Should turn out OK after a while, as long as the O2 sensor works fine.

Congrats! Looks like you'll get the opportunity to get to know the vehicle in cleaning it up a bit, I'm sure it is mechanically sound (you bought it after all). Price seems pretty fair to me. What engine is it?

Welcome back! Most of us are still around, Peter is still posting like a madman, though he's sold his E30. Ove might wander around here, we can't really check it because he hasn't shown activity on the forum for years. Gus(tavo?) has gone too.

The E30's had a bit of memory loss when disconnecting the battery, which should be relearned after a bit of driving.

I've said just the same about this one, if I like it (still need to get a chance to drive it) I might want one, in 7 years or so. I'll wear the E46 down to its last bolt first! It has near 200.000 km now and I'd like to at least double that. In my current job that will take me 4 more years.
