There is a relay, with an internal fuse, as you describe, Rick. When the fuse blows, the light is never out, as there is no power to the system. My fuse blew a couple of years ago (easy to do if you mishandle the the battery circuit), and I replaced the relay/fuse combination -- so I doubt the relay is bad (although it's certainly worth checking!) I agree that ABS is less than an essential feature -- although I like to keep everything working! The simple fix is may be to disconnect the controller and remove the bulb from the warning light (otherwise it won't pass state inspection). Anyone else with similar experience?by bushhog - Technical Forum
Having ABS problems, and hope it's not the main controller. 1988 325is. After starting up, the brakes are intermittent -- usually think I need to be ready with the hand brake. After a minute or two of driving (whether brakes have been applied or not), the system check determines that the ABS is not working properly, the ABS dash warning light comes on and braking resumes to normal (obviby bushhog - Technical Forum
Upper shock absorber mounts (accessable through the trunk) fail frequently and can cause an occasional "clunk" in the rear. The mount is rubber and simply breaks apart.by bushhog - Technical Forum
Ferdinand -- Great Article! It's about time my understanding of transmissions advanced beyond "it's magic"!by bushhog - Technical Forum
Thanks for all the comments. I plan to get under the car tomorrow to check the trans. mounts. Can I tell anything about the shifter bushings, etc. by pushing, pulling, etc. from underneath? With respect to the synchro -- I have always understood (though I have never rebuilt a trans.) that a synchro. generally served two gears (e.g., 1st and 3rd, 2nd and 4th). If so, wouldn't the probby bushhog - Technical Forum
All other gears are A-OK. Problem only in third. Linkage doesn't feel noticably different -- except, as I described, it just doesn't seem to push far enough into 3rd to engage properly. Works OK sometimes -- doesn't seem related to acceleration, loading, etc. Just goes in sometimes, others I just get a grinding. It did seem to just start one day, can't say whether itby bushhog - Technical Forum
My '88 325is has developed a 3rd gear problem -- unclear to me whether it's linkage or the transmission itself. Problem is shifting, up or down, into 3rd, whether under load, acceleration or not. Seems as though the shifter doesn't move the internals far enough to engage, with a resulting nasty grinding sound. Occasionally goes in fine. Any opinions on the likely cause?
