Every once in a while I see a nice one here in SoCal for sale, and for some odd reason, rust never enters the equation here. alanby alanrw - Community Forum
Hmmm, I guess you could swap out the computer to see if that makes a difference but is it really worth the effort for one led? None of the other dash lights are on with the key out? alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
QuoteBob in Everett After all this discussion, I am coming to the conclusion that the technician did not make the exchange correctly by not disconnecting the battery. His use of the tool may not have been as proficient as well. He mostly works on newer cars. I am going to print out the article and take it to the shop and see if he will try it again. Thanks for the info. It helps a lot.by alanrw - Technical Forum
Boy, now you guys have me. I wonder if the design changed? Mine is a 1984. Of course, I never could figure out why I needed a timer in the first place. alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
Just went out and checked mine. Keys out of ignition, Timer function led is off. alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
Ferd. are you the original owner of the car? If not, I bet a previous owner just pulled the bulb (or someone who worked on the car). alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
I have taken one apart, it has a metal dome that makes contact with a circuit board when you press the button down. It is supposed to pop back up when released. I bet yours is permanently deformed. I think I have a spare, let me know. The OBC has to come out for the repair, kinda a pain. alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
i am some what surprised as disconnecting the battery and bleeding off any residual charge is a major safety issue when dealing with airbags. Around here, a guy was killed a few years ago when he was doing a steering wheel repair, he head was in the way as he is doing something in the steering wheel inners and the bag goes off breaking his neck. As was pointed out above, sometimes you have toby alanrw - Technical Forum
Wow, the reason you ALWAYS d/c the battery is so you don't get an accidental bag deployment which can be expensive at best, fatal at worst. Connector arcing can deploy the bag. alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
And for safe measure, keep your head to the side just to be on the safe side. alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
OK, 1. disconnect car battery 2. step on brakes a few times to bleed off and electricity in the system 3. remove air bag (screws in back), d/c air bag pack 4. remove steering wheel and switch out turn switch. 5 reverse above steps. DO NOT RECONNECT BATTERY BEFORE EVERYTHING IS BACK TOGETHER OR YOU WILL GET A FAULT LIGHT WHICH HAS TO BE RESET AT THE DEALER!!!! ALANby alanrw - Technical Forum
Bob, give me a day, I can get the answer for you insofar as the air bag is concerned. alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
Bob, a buddy of mine who used to be a BMW tech now runs a company that replaces airbags post collision. Let me query him and I will get back to you. alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
The one where you put in 4 random digits works by tripping a relay. I think after 3 attempts, the horn starts blowing. The relay interrupts current to the starter.by alanrw - Technical Forum
Vehicle immobilizer system malfunction? alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
Bob, if it is worse after the balance, wonder if they booted the job? Take it back? Possible the steel wheels are bent? alanby alanrw - Community Forum
Do you typically plow with the top up or down? alanby alanrw - Car Talk
Don't go soft on me Rick, you are one of my heros!!!! alanby alanrw - Car Talk
Wheels were laying flat, no problem. alanby alanrw - Community Forum
Very nice. Did the exact same thing to mine but here in the states, I used Dulicolor metallic silver and Duplicolor clear. They were about $6 per can, a can of each did all 4. Duplicolor is available at Pep Boys as well as most of the chain auto parts stores. alanby alanrw - Community Forum
If the car passed a cooling system pressure test, you should be good to go. I think the E30 needs the coolant system bled of air after refilling it. FYI, on my wife's PT Cruiser, the car overheated, turned out the cause was the electric fan on the radiator which was supposed to go on when the temp rose to a certain value. (engine is mounted sideways so there is no fan on the belt system) Thby alanrw - Car Talk
Rick, Pelican Parts has an excellent step by step with pics for r&r SI batteries. alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
Had a similar issue. Turned out the allen head bolt that holds the shifter to the trans was loose enough to cause the linkage to get sticky or jam. alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
Hey guys, the leather on my 84 steering wheel is starting to split. I have found that there were 2 type of wheels used in the e30-fine spline and coarse spline. Does anyone know how to differentiate? Like how many splines on each type? Also, has anyone bought the recover kit from Alan Gunn in Florida? If so, how did you like it? alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
I will check it but here in Southern California, we almost never have electrical issues. When ever I pull stuff apart, the electrical connectors are factory fresh. But I will pull the rear seat and dash module and see what's doing. After 26 years, I would be leaning towards a part simply wearing out. alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
Well, what I discovered by doing a little web search is that the fuel sender on the 84 is both the gauge and the low fuel light. This morning when I went out to the car, the gauge was now reading "E" with a low fuel warning light. I am thinking defective fuel level sensor. I also found a diagnostic where by you use various resistors to check the fuel gauge at various electrical resistanby alanrw - Technical Forum
Yesterday, my fuel gauge showed between 1/2-1/4 tank when the low fuel light went on. Anyone know how this system works? alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
Yeah, but hasn't that always been the case with turbos? I had heard supposedly that all of the unreliability has been figured out and that diesels will be the answer for high mpg and performance. thoughts? alanby alanrw - Car Talk
I think the fuel pump runs off of the relay so you should be getting 12.0V. Not sure of what the current rating is or if there is a fuse as well on the fuel pump. alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
Whatever the reason, the engineers designed the system such that the low pressure pump feeds the high pressure booster pump downstream of the tank. Most cars have a single pump in the tank which does it all. As was posted above, BMW went to the single pump down the road. The mesh stuff is probably to keep the big chunks in the tank and out of the pump and rest of the fuel system. alanby alanrw - Technical Forum
