Agreed, most new thermostats today fail in the open position, unlike the old ones that would fail closed, and end up cooking your motor. I am sure you will find that to be the problem.by Flyboy - Technical Forum

Hi Tom, welcome to the nuthouse, here you will find all the info you need, this is the most knowledgeable and nicest bunch of Beemer owners you could wish to meet. The cam timing is a no brainer, but you have to be methodical and just recheck every step............ask me how I know. The pin for locating the hole in the flywheel is easy enough, an 8mm drill bit works perfectly, you will findby Flyboy - Technical Forum
Hi Steve, not sure about weather you can stop the oil pan leak without removing the pan, if that is what you meant, I have never done it, but I would remove the pan, get in there, clean those surfaces and put in a new gasket, then you know it is new. With all the work that you are going to be doing down there anyway, it is not that much extra at all, and as you say, you want to do it right, so yby Flyboy - Technical Forum
Did anyone see the documentary called "who killed the electric car" it was very interesting how GM and the California Govt along with the big oil put a swift demise to it. The expose center's around GM's EV1, of which hundreds were built to satisfy a law passed by the California Air Commission, or some board with that sort of name, that regulated that 10% of all cars would beby Flyboy - Community Forum
Hi all, just a quick update, so you don't think I have disappeared. I have been running the car for about 10 days now, hoping the lumpy idle and the stalling would sort itself out. Well it has pretty much, I am pleased to say, seems the ECU has found its feet and made friends with the new parts, she is 99% there now, idles rock steady at 750rpm, on the odd occasion when it does hunt, it isby Flyboy - Technical Forum
Not to sure how that overpass would stand up to this boy and his extended family crossing, but then again, not much chance of him coming off second in an altercation with a motor car Africa is not for sissy's............by Flyboy - Community Forum
I guess it is very market specific, none of the E30's here have small filler necks or anything like that, you could put whatever pipe you liked in. Although we have unleaded 93,95 and 98, and most cars use the stuff, leaded is still freely available at all our filling stations, and cheaper than unleaded, to boot. When they introduced unleaded, the discounted it to try and sweeten the dealby Flyboy - Technical Forum
I am surprised that the mechanic told you to run unleaded, I have always run my e30 on super, or leaded petrol, after all, when these motors were designed and built, unleaded didn't exist yet, unless you guys in Europe don't get leaded fuel any more, in which case +1 on what Dave said. I ran my e30 on unleaded once, and I can tell you, I am sure it did not like it, it did all sorts ofby Flyboy - Technical Forum
Hi Guys, thanks for the advice. Yes I will do a leak down test if things don't get better, but again, lesson learnt, it didn't do it before, only since it is all back together....mmmmmm?? Rick, no we don't get the same product here, Chevron does not have a presence in South Africa, but there are plenty of other makes of injector cleaners, from Wynn's, Castrol etc, as I haveby Flyboy - Technical Forum
I recon you guys are right, the plug gaps looked a little big when I checked them, I will give it another run to the airport and back tomorrow, 60km round trip, and it is all freeway driving, and being a Sunday, there will be very little traffic, so I can stretch its legs, blow all the cobwebs out, and then I will pull the plugs and do a reading. Al, you may be right, when it stalls at idle, itby Flyboy - Technical Forum
Hi Guys, took the car to work, a good 60km round trip, it is running well, I can definitely feel that it has got its grunt back again, especially on acceleration, we will see how the fuel consumption goes now, hoping it improves a bit, although it was never too bad, getting around 7.5L/100Km And the motor is now oh soooo quiet, its eerie. Problem of course is, now I can hear all the other noiseby Flyboy - Technical Forum
Hi All, this chapter has come to an end, last night I was up wrenching until 11pm by the romantic glow of my trusty lead light. I had made a pact, run or bust, I was either going to get it running or cash sale to the insurance company, strange how these vehicle fires just start out of the blue, for no reason. Anyway, as I said, I checked the injectors, all clicking along happily, then I checby Flyboy - Technical Forum
Injectors checked, got the better half to crank it over while I climbed in there with the stethoscope and looked like a doctor giving someone a physical. Result; all four injectors clicking away in chorus like a church choir. So now I don't know any more. Pulled the plugs and all four were soaked in fuel.by Flyboy - Technical Forum

Quote1985 Suzuki GS700e Rick, do you visit the GS Resources forum, plenty good info there for your GS. I am busy with a, from the frame up restoration on my '81 GS1000G, which has ground to a halt with the Beemer being sick and all. I bought the bike in '82 with 15000Km on the clock, I still own it, 29 years later with 375000Km on the clock now, I love that bike.by Flyboy - Car Talk
It should be pretty simple, the plug for the injectors has three wires, obviously one power and two earths, one for each bank of injectors, so it should be easy enough to bridge the power wire to each earth at a time and watch for the needle of the multimeter to flick back and forth as the ECU switches the earth to fire the injectors. Or I will bridge the power wire to an earth on the car, lookiby Flyboy - Technical Forum
Hi Guys, update, plumbed in the fuel pressure gauge, bridged the relay to run the pump, steady 3 bar, right on spec, then sucked on the vacuum pipe from the regulator, pressure dropped to a steady 2.5 bar, again, right on spec, but would the pressure remain in limits during cranking? Put it all together and hit the starter, pressure climbed to and maintained a steady 3 bar. So there goes theby Flyboy - Technical Forum
Hi Guys, yes, indeed it can lead to a bit of confusion, some of the motors are 2.5 bar and some are 3.0 bar So just for your reading pleasure, here are the specs; Mine is in red QuoteFuel system pressure (relative to intake manifold pressure) 3-Series (E30) 316i with M40/B16 engine . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3.0 ± 0.06 bars 318i with M10/B18 engine . . .by Flyboy - Technical Forum
That motor looks seriously good, nice job, well done.by Flyboy - Technical Forum
Hi Rick Sorry, nothing much to update, just have not had the time to work on it. When I got home last night, I quickly dived in to replace the temp sender, which chewed up a bunch of precious daylight, I get home at 5:30 and it is dark by 7:00 now. Anyway, reason, the only way to get to the thing is with a 19mm tube socket, which I do not have, so I figured, since I won't be using the oldby Flyboy - Technical Forum
Earendil, get rid of it, it doesn't get that hot, mine has been gone for years, and I must say the look of a nice clean painted hood underneath is quite pleasing. Mine was removed so long ago that I can not remember how much difference it makes to the noise levels inside the car, but my car is very quiet inside.by Flyboy - Technical Forum
Alright, broke down today or rather, managed to track down and bought a new Temp sensor, (yes, yes, don't worry, it is a genuine Bosch unit, not some Chinese knock off) and a fuel pressure gauge. I know, I could have pulled the temp sender and tested it, but I thought, what the hell, while I am in there and it is relatively easy to get to, let me replace it, because once I put everything baby Flyboy - Technical Forum

Renault Scenic, the better half's grocery getter. Bought it because with the seats folded flat it is HUGE inside, so I can transport motorcycle frames and the such like off to the powder coaters. ;-) It is a 1.6l and the Renault's are known for their good gas mil age, but using it this last week while the e30 is sick, it amazed me that my e30, still does better on gas than the Renaultby Flyboy - Car Talk
Hi Rick It is good to hear that the car is now a pleasure to drive, I know the feeling, every time I start thinking of getting something newer, I do some work on the 318, and bingo, I don't want to drive anything else, despite what anyone thinks, the little e30 was one of BMW's finest offerings, way ahead of its time and the competition, when it was launched. And even now, 30 years laby Flyboy - Technical Forum
Hi all Thanks for the replys, I think we can rule the battery out for now, as you can imagine, all the tinkering did run the bettery down, and I have mostly been starting and cranking while jumped off the better half's Renault Scenic, I did also run a multimeter across the battery on day one, and got a good 12.5V with the car not running and the day I did get it to start, I was reading 14Vby Flyboy - Technical Forum
It's all good Rick, your and everyone Else's input is highly appreciated. You may not think it is much, but it is, trust me, it has helped to eliminate a lot of things.by Flyboy - Technical Forum
Hi Guys Here is what I have, took the intake plenum off, all looks to be in order under there, no external fuel leaks at all while cranking.???????????? Weird Now here it gets even more weird, if I disconnect the return line and and bridge out the fuel pump relay so the fuel pump is running with the ignition on run, then there is good return flow, if I suck on the vacuum line from the regulatorby Flyboy - Technical Forum
