Quoterkj Oh, and I think that function (timer mode) would come in handy if you were to ralley the car. Right Ferdy? I rally my iX all the time, and that timer function is... useless. It's a whole lot easier to use a stopwatch, or in my case, a big clock app on my phone velcroed to a big clipboard. The only time I have ever used the timer was to determine which of two routes home from work

QuoteFerdinand There is a screw-in bulb for the seat belt warning light, but three empty sockets below that. Flipped over, the sockets don't look any different than the one for the seat belt warning light. Hmm. That's definitely different from mine! I'm guessing it may be a Canadian/U.S. thing. Quote Nonetheless, I would NOT recommend simply removing the airbag warning bulb.

QuoteBob in Everett Now I have a flashing red light on the check panel that flashes for a while then stays on steady. I suppose I could remove the two bulbs in the panel. It appears that one flashes and then the other stays on. I guess I will have to check that without the cover on it. Unfortunately you will find when you open it up that the SRS bulb is permanently soldered directly to the circu

Quoterkj Hi Guys, I picked this up this morning on my facebook page. Great reading! It's a little old now, but not much in there is out of date. I love my iX.

QuoteKelly Senna - in Portuguese, French, and English with English Subtitles. (2010) ... The end is very sad; I almost cried. I enjoyed this film more than I expected that I would. I'm not ashamed to say I DID cry, even knowing how it ends (which of course most people do anyway)! That's how good this movie is. I've shown it to non-car people, and without exception they all liked

OK, here you go: Between the centers of the strut tower openings: 41 3/4", or 1060mm. Between the front outer bolt centers: 45 3/8", or 1153mm. This is probably slight overstated, because the tape had to arc over the intake manifold in order to reach. Good luck!

Well, the problem is that those pictures are for a RWD E30, and Mike has an iX. As Peter says, the front suspension is totally different in an iX, so the measurements will be off. I missed the chance to measure mine in the daylight today, but I'll try to do it in the morning.

I'll measure my iX when I get home tonight. I think it's straight.

QuoteArcheo-peteriX Other than RealOEM parts pics; I don't know where you would find that info outside of a body shop Yeah, I'm afraid that I'm with Peter on this. I've never seen anything like this outside of a body shop. I do almost everything myself, but when it comes to chassis straightening, I wouldn't trust the results unless it was on a rack. It's one of th

QuoteArcheo-peteriX Seriously though, there is a bit of an echo in here lately. Have we all just retired the E30s like Cab or are they all running perfectly so that there are no problems to report or ask about...F10 fuses aside Well, I'm still here, and still driving my iX to work every day and to rallies on the occasional weekend. I was going to write about a clunk in the front suspens

Welcome! Electric gremlins can be so annoying to troubleshoot. The first thing I would do is get yourself a wiring diagram from here: http://www.armchair.mb.ca/~dave/BMW/e30/. It says that Fuse 10 controls the following: seatbelt warning service interval indicator tach/fuel economy gauge gauges/indicators brake warning system back-up lights on-board computer idle speed control active ch

QuoteMichiel 318iS I guess Rick won't log in for some time, as far as I know he was closest to the heart of the storm. I hope we hear from Rick soon! I've heard from two friends on Long Island -- one had 4 inches of water in the house, and the other had 7 feet in the garage!

I put the O2 relay in the place of the fuel pump relay, and... it worked perfectly. I couldn't even really tell that anything was missing. It's funny that there are two identical relays rubbing shoulders under the hood, and one of them is needed to run the car, and the other one is almost optional! (I'll still be replacing it tomorrow, though.)

Quoterkj Dave, I'm pretty sure you can put the 02 relay in the pump slot and leave the 02 slot open for the ride home (the computer will just go to a default setting). Rick Hmm. I thought about that, but at some stage in the troubleshooting process when I put the O2 relay in the fuel pump relay socket, I turned the key and did not hear any sounds from the fuel pump. (I don't think I act

QuoteFerdinand That said, it's a safety issue in that pin-30 on the fuel pump relay goes straight to the battery and is hot all the time. In case of accident, or whatever, the fuel pump will continue to run until somebody thinks to pull the jumper wire out of that socket. Yeah, I did think about that. It probably wouldn't happen, but then nobody ever thinks they're going to get in

Today while trying to leave work at lunchtime, my car suddenly would not start. Fortunately it was lunchtime, so I took some time to diagnose it and determined that the fuel pump was not getting power. I pulled the fuel pump relay, jumped sockets 30 and 87, and I heard the fuel pump come to life. Going further, I was able to start the car like this and it idled fine, so after a few seconds I shut

Since this has come up again, there's always the new Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S/Toyota 86 (that's all one car). It's kind of boy-racerish, and at $25K-$30K not real cheap, but cheaper than a new BMW and looks interesting.

QuoteBob in Everett On the last weekend of good weather I spent 6 hours in the cabrio and 5 of them were top down while driving to the ski resort at Mt. Baker. What a view from Artists Point at the end of the road. I drove that road once last winter, and it was a beautiful drive! A couple winters ago I recorded a winter drive here in Vermont. I love my iX. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DH

QuoteFerdinand But after that, Holeeeeey, there's a bunch of warp-9 flat-out 4th-gear stuff through the trees that makes me think of this quote... Wow! OK, I'm awake now. Just curious about this no-recce-everyone-gets-the same-notes thing: When you're cruising down a flat stretch of road like that (or any road, for that matter) at Warp 9, your notes are telling you about whate

QuoteFerdinand On landing the car takes a pretty good uppercut punch to its chin. Watch the left rear corner of the hood, near the windshield. Before the jump it fit flush. After the jump that corner of the hood near the hinge is raised about an inch. The rollcage ties into the strut mounts, so those don't move. But the nose ahead of the front struts is bent. Ow, that poor car. Those

QuoteFerdinandWhile we're waiting, a hot blond in short shorts and a pink T-shirt came up to admire our car and ask us for a ride. Uhh, Ferdy? I think you might need to get out more. Either that, or your hot-o-meter seriously needs recalibrating. Just got to watch this. You guys are having way too much fun. (And by that I mean "more fun than I'm having".) I mean, especial

QuoteFerdinandAs we move up to take our place on the start line, listen how the poor old Nissan 240 creaks and groans from all its arthritic suspension joints I know exactly how the poor old car feels. I never say this enough, but I really love seeing all of your rally reports. Besides all the cool videos (and photos), they make me extremely jealous!

I sure wish we had the diesel options here in North America that you guys have. Over here, if you want a diesel, it's pretty much Volkswagen or a truck. The VW TDIs do seem to be gaining in popularity, though, so maybe some other manufacturers will see the light and start selling their diesels here too!

QuoteJose Pinto Yesterday completed 100km with the "taxi" and the fuel consumption is somewhere 6.5 to 7.5 L/100km. Not bad for the big heavy tank it is! For us metric-impaired Americans, that's about 31-36 MPG. Outstanding!

Cool video. Thanks for that. I had seen it before but it was nice seeing it again. Someday I hope I can get my E30 looking that nice. I couldn't help noticing on the instrument panel that his brake lining warning light was on, just like mine has been for the past few months, ever since the wire on the rear sensor broke. One of these days I'll get around to replacing it.

Hi folks, I have added a new module that allows the embedding of videos within posts. Use the little blue video icon in the toolbar and paste in the URL of the video (works with YouTube and Google; I haven't tested it with Vimeo or anything else). Have fun!

There is now! I just added a module that embeds YouTube videos, and includes a little video icon in the toolbar for adding video. Looks like it applies retroactively to the ones you already made links to, as well.
