To me, the E30 M3 is an incredible car. Yeah, I'm a bit dated myself, but there's something about them that you just don't get with more modern cars. I think a lot of it has to do with their relative lightness, in combination with great handling and exciting power. And as icing on the cake, they sound amazing. I just got back from a track weekend at Watkins Glen, where we had two E30 M3s running. The sound of that car in full song at wide open throttle just makes me drool.

I'm very glad I don't have to pay for the upkeep on one, though.

Yup. Lotus seems to be about the only manufacturer that understands that cars are better when you "add lightness." Although Porsche has managed to keep the weight down on their cars fairly well, too. The E92 M3 is an amazing car, but I detest the fact that BMW (and other manufacturers as well) just compensate for the weight gain by simply increasing HP. Yes, the 0-60 and 1/4 mile times will be good, but heavy cars just don't have that same "feel." Of course, I say this having never driven or ridden in a new M3 and with absolutely no possible way to afford one even if I wanted to, so that's how much my opinion matters!

I do know, however, that I prefer driving my 170hp E30 over my brother-in-law's 340hp E34 M5. That car has a great engine and the "oomph" is good fun, but the E30 just feels better to me in handling and braking, even if I'll always be looking at his tail-lights in a straight line. And that M5 is no slouch in corners either (I certainly wouldn't turn down an E34 M5 if someone wanted to give me one), you just can't hide that extra 1000 pounds, no matter how good the engineers were who designed the car.
