That's all I've ever used. I think mine has the green stuff from NAPA. It's just ethylene glycol -- nothing much to waste a lot of attention over.

interesting. ok. i guess it's old enough of a car it's no big deal but newer vw/audi there's a special deal that has to go in there and it's spendy.

I spent a bunch of time reading about antifreeze when I had to decide what to use in my car. Ethylene glycol (green stuff) is fine to use. I did decide to use green stuff without phosphates. Peak is the brand I chose. It's cheap and common to find. The reason I chose non-phosphate is because if you leave your antifreeze in the engine for a long time, the phosphorus will contribute to the slow dissolving of your aluminum head which is then deposited as a layer on the inside of your radiator. Or something like that. In any case, if you change your coolant more than once every five years that isn't supposed to be a big problem. I just happen to know how lazy I am, so I decided to use a coolant that might let me get away with leaving it in there forever.

John
yeah I did the reading thing too, and agree that 50/50 phosphor free sounds best. i'll get peak as well as they've got the only RILF in existence on the bottle in the industry. winking smiley
I test fired the car last night and filled the system with water [I'll drain that out, sort of a poor man's flush] and confirmed that I am leak free so this is great.

placed an order today for the stuff for the steering
  • 2 lemfoerder tie rod assemblies
  • 2 tie rod boots and 5 clamps
  • 2 power steering hoses
i figure ill do:
  • drain system
  • remove 2 leaky lines and clean the area
  • remove/inspect/clean the reservoir
  • install 2 lines and button it all up
fill with... any opinions?
i don't want to refill the system with something else thats going to be hard on lines and seals.

ATF is what belongs in the PS system.

Many E30s still have the warning sticker that states 'Use ONLY ATF!' on the side of the reservoir.
Mine has that sticker. I've been using this stuff:

Valvoline Dexron III Mercon ATF
Is this not correct?

here's some more M42 porn

filthy mess even after a degrease

draining the topside. the fluid is gross.

removed the split boot and cleaned up around the rack. i am certain the rack is not leaking. whew.

for the love of god if you ever do this, make sure you disconnect the battery first.
one simple precaution I forgot and *zap* against the starter.
i hope i didn't fry my ecu or something else.

Looks good to me. The important thing is not to use Power Steering fluid which has been known to damage the seals.
well ATF isn't doing much better of a job at *not* damaging the seals
I wonder about this stuff

I thought you said the rack seals looked good?
Those are the ones that seem to go most often.

The rubber hoses tend to get degraded by engine oil that inevitably leaks on them; just like engine mounts and axle boots.
however, I have zero engine leakage
the seals on the current rack do not leak yet
it seems like the hoses get permeated by ATF
apparently this is quite common on E30s and other BMWs of the era?

I think, just being in the engine bay (its an oily smelly place), AND, natural hose break down (even with the right oils) tend to weaken hoses. And by the way, in my many years I've seen many euro hoses fall apart; there are good and bad ones, even from Bmw.

The dextron oil is what you want, I'm not sure about the Mobil one you have pictured, although I do believe in the Mobil one motor oils, does wonders for my small collection of motorcycles smiling smiley

I think there might be a screen in the reservoir too. Ferdy knows about that (maybe others?

Looks like you're doing a nice clean job, I love seeing that (the care thing to a wonderful machine....respect thumbs up

Rick
I went for the Mobil 1. I agree with you that their products work great on bikes. So, what the heck? $2/more per bottle.
The tie rod assemblies are out of the car. God I need to do LCAs too. 139K miles, what do I expect?

...and yes, I like working in a clean environment on clean cars. Nothing goes back dirty.

at least now they're prepped and ready, the hoses are on and the system has its first fill.
tomorrow a bombing run to the dealer.

so, if i go ahead and order a set of lemforder LCAs to get it all done...
like such [www.rmeuropean.com]
the only other item i should replace before an alignment is the bushing
i think ill put poly in as well as on the swaybar
are the endlinks a big deal? mine dont look bad.

new hoses installed. i hate the hose clamps but they'll do for now. a nice stainless t-bolt style would be sweet.

tie rods as prepped as they can be grinning smiley

i could probably re-use these...

...but not with one like this. im still irked the tie rod assys, especially from lemforder, don't include this part

here's the topside all buttoned up

tonight, I'll yank the LCAs, etc and prep the lollipops for the urethane bushings
