The leather cover on my 84 is looking pretty bad. I know they have recover kits but the area where it connects to the 3 spokes looks like it would be a monster to deal with. I am thinking of the easy way out-new wheel on Ebay. But isn't it the case that the spline counts changed after a certain year? Isn't it the early E30's had fine splines and then later they went to coarse splines?

FWIW, realoem.com doesn't show different part numbers for different years. And when I've had the steering wheel off on my '91, the splines looked pretty fine to me, so my guess would be that they haven't changed. To be sure, you might just look around salvage yards in your area (car-part.com is an invaluable web site for this), and compare what you find with what you've got.
