There is indeed such a thing on the 6-cylinder M20 engine. It sticks into the top of the oil pan on the left side of the car, and triggers the "low oil" warning light when the oil is about 0.5 quart/liter low. It has nothing to do with oil pressure -- just the level.

Ah... For the optional 'check control' versions... You're right and I should have known that, my iX used to have it...

I have the same issue. my sensor failed. One used on I got did not work and another only lasted a month. Just short the #2 and # pins in the connector on the sensor with a small bit of wire wrapped around the two pins and push it down to the bottom of the connector. Plug the connector back in and the light will no longer come on.
